1933 CHRYSLER CL IMPERIAL SEDAN - Hyman Ltd

FOR OUR CLASSIC OF THE DAY WE ARE CROSSING THE POND TO VISIT
HYMAN LTD

5455

1933 CHRYSLER CL IMPERIAL SEDAN

For the 1931 model year, Chrysler introduced a major update to their elegant and luxurious Imperial line. While the Chrysler corporation had only been in existence for a few years to this point, they had quickly earned a reputation for quality cars of exceptional value. The Imperial line began in 1925 as a way for Chrysler to retain customers who wished to step up from their six-cylinder cars into something more grand and luxurious. The Imperial grew larger and more extravagant as they evolved and in ’31, a new 385 cubic inch straight-eight developing an impressive 125 horsepower was fitted to the 146” wheelbase chassis. The nine-bearing engine breathed through a Stromberg downdraught carburetor, as opposed to the more common updraft, setting it apart from other cars of the period. Perhaps the most recognizable feature of the CL Imperial was the seemingly never-ending hood that stretched over six feet from the radiator shell to the base of the windscreen. Credited to the industrial designer Alexis de Sakhnoffsky, this design feature hid the traditional cowl under a seamless hood, allowing for a clean look that greatly accentuated the length of the front end, giving the Imperial its striking signature appearance.

We are very proud to present this 1933 CL Imperial Close Coupled Sedan, an outstanding example of Chrysler’s last true Grand Classic. With the Great Depression closing in, sales were so slow that Chrysler only produced 151 1933 Imperials before the controversial Airflow took over in 1934; making this among the rarest of all early Imperials. The attractive close-coupled sedan body style had a shortened rear passenger compartment, with a trunk sitting between the rear fenders, rather than slung out the back. Combine the short rear end with the signature long hood and the result is a more sporting appearance than a formal seven passenger body, but one that is still practical and roomy enough for five.  This example has wonderful look with its padded black leatherette roof, chrome landau irons and a matching trunk. Set against the medium gray paintwork with black coach stripe, the result is a striking and elegant sedan.  It is nicely equipped with optional and quite attractive artillery wheels which feature large chrome center caps and chrome trim rings, and a split, bottom opening windscreen for cabin ventilation. Correct flex-beam headlamps frame the magnificent radiator grille

Opening the door reveals an intimate and luxurious cabin trimmed in gray broadcloth upholstery. Beautifully restored heavy-duty chrome door hinges hint at the over-built nature that the CL Imperial is so well known for. Wood-grained metal trim the surround windows and the ornate instrument panel. Wonderful details can be found all around the interior, such as small pockets integrated into the headlining, most likely there for cigarette cases and cosmetics. Even the driver’s seat is equipped with a very unusual backrest adjustment, an interesting feature we’ve not seen on a CL Imperial.
The car has a long and noted history having been owned by noted collector Paul Stern in the late 1960’s and early 1970s when it was purchased from Mr. Stern by the father of its most recent owner. The car was comprehensively restored in the mid to late 1990’s and has seen little to no use since. A highly original and  very proper car,  complete with original serial number tag and body number tag “69” which were replaced during the restoration but are still in the files that accompany its sale. The car owned and restored by  well-known expert on Imperials of this era, ensuring an accurate and well-detailed restoration. Paint, chrome, and exterior trim are all in beautiful, concours condition. The mechanicals are in fine order as well; lifting the long hood reveals a stunningly prepared straight eight engine with correct plating and finishes. The undercarriage and chassis are also finished to a very high standard. A CCCA National First Place badge is proudly displayed a testament to its outstanding quality and presentation.  With its striking good looks, exceptional rarity and fine condition, this CL Imperial is an excellent value among full classic automobiles.

Snippets: An Aviator & an Architect: Initially ordered by J. J. Jones of 88 St. James’s Street, London, (the building was designed by Richard Norman Shaw for the Alliance Assurance Company in 1901) but the first owner was actually Hylton Ralph Murray-Philipson (Jnr) of Stobo Castle, Peebles. Stobo Castle had been purchased by Hylton Murray-Philipson Snr in 1905 & in 1924 he conveyed the estate to his son who was a pioneer aviator having learnt to fly in 1927.  He owned his own air-craft  & in 1930 whilst enroute to LeBourget, France he crashed his de Havilland DH80 Puss Moth on the Goodwin Sands in Kent.! Hylton’s career consisted of being the C.O. of the City of Edinburgh Auxiliary Air Force Squadron, MP (Cons) for Twickenham; Chairman of N.E. Marine Engineering Co & a member of the King’s Bodyguard for Scotland & the Royal Company of Archers.  Hylton Murray-Philipson suffered from ill health & died in 1934 aged 32 leaving his wife (Monica) & two young children.  In 1939 Monica Murray-Philipson sold Stobo Castle to Wenefryde Agatha Scott, 10th Countess of Dysart & after 10 years of being a widow Monica married Colonel P. H. Lloyd of Stone House in Blaston.  The Colonel & Murray-Philipson had business connections as they were both company directors of Manvers Main Collieries Ltd – Murray-Philipson in 1923/33 and Lloyd in 1940/47.  In 1943 GNS75 is shown as being with her 2nd family, that of John Stanley Coombe Beard of Grayshott Hall, Surrey.  John Beard was an architect well known for designing over 100 cinemas in many styles – Baroque, Art Deco, Italian Renaissance, Greek Revival & Egyptian! In 1937 Mrs Beard made call to the police about an attempted burglary which resulted in the 1st arrest directly attributable to the new 999 service!

1983 PORSCHE924 CARRERA GT

SPORTSCAR SATURDAY @
SILVERSTONE AUCTIONS

1983 PORSCHE924 CARRERA GT

Porsche wanted to enter the Group 4 Sports Car Class for Le Mans in 1980 and based their car on their successful 924 mainstream model. The left hand drive versions were labelled 937 while the right hand drive was 938. All non-essential elements were removed from the car in an effort to reduce weight. The vehicle was subsequently entered into the gruelling 24 Hours of Le Mans but in order to comply with homologation regulations road going versions had to be produced and Porsche addressed this rule with the Carrera GT. Standard specification included a close ratio dog-leg 5 speed G/box, LSD, Bilstein shock absorbers, polyurethane plastic front and rear flared guards, a polyurethane plastic front spoiler, and a bonnet mounted air scoop for the intercooler. With a 2-litre turbo-charged engine producing 210 bhp, it will reach a top speed of 150 mph and hits 60 mph in an impressive 6.5 seconds.
This 924 right-hand drive Carrera GT was originally delivered to Dick Lovett, Swindon in April 1981 and stored by them until August of that year in order to receive an 'X' registration. A copy of the original bill of sale and various correspondence document an early history between the first owner and supplying UK dealer. The car was maintained by Dick Lovett during its early life and was sold by them in 1983, 1988, 1990 and then in 1996 to the current owner. During his ownership, this Carrera GT has been maintained by specialists such as noted Porsche experts Paragon Porsche in Kent. The original service book is full of stamps and an almost complete set of MoT certificates substantiate a total mileage of just over 75,000 miles from new. There is a substantial folder of bills and receipts that document a car that has clearly been maintained to a high standard.
The current owner describes the paintwork as: "Excellent for its age, with very, very light surface scratching due to poor polishing by previous owner in places. There is some very light crazing on the front wings where the polyurethane has flexed. The paintwork is believed to be all original except for the driver's door which had a minor repair approximately 20 years ago." The interior is presented in very impressive condition with no tears or scratches to the fabric or leather. The engine is described as: "Not concours but generally clean with age-related surface corrosion to some parts. It runs beautifully and is believed to be in very good condition internally." In 2000, the car had a top-end rebuild by Porsche Bournemouth and it also had a new head gasket in 2012. It has seen limited miles in the past decade but has been serviced annually regardless. The cam belt was last changed in 2008 at a 73,371 by Paragon.
Evidently, this 924 Carrera has been maintained to a high mechanical standard over the years and is an honest example of an extremely rare Porsche. Only 75 examples were ever made for the UK market and these delightful driver's cars are seemingly undervalued given their desirable status as the ultimate 924. A true homologated road-special, we love the Carrera GT and welcome inspections on this unmolested example.
