1966 MERCEDES BENZ 250 COUPE

This astonishingly original right hand drive Mercedes 250 Coupe is such a car, being in perfect working order. Sparingly used and as a consequence, the odometer now shows just 50K miles, a total which seems completely plausible, given its supporting history and in the way in which it drives – actually perfectly, plus it is light, tight and responsive.

This is a matching numbers car and remains original to its factory specification. The body is arrow-straight with exemplary panel gaps and presents beautifully.

The exterior fittings and abundant chrome trim are in superb condition and its further complement by its original and rare factory sunroof. The windscreen is unblemished, as is all the remaining original window glass and corresponding rubber seals.
The interior is remarkably preserved with dark blue leather seats, immaculate walnut dashboard and headcloth. The comprehensive instruments, heating and lighting controls are complete and fully functioning as you would expect from a German car of this quality. Pleasingly the cabin retains the original period radio player and speakers which remain in good working order.

The Mercedes engine starts on the button, idles consistently and with ample power on tap, pulls the large coupe along with ease. The automatic gearbox is precise and shifting is easy, quiet and smooth making this the 60’s version of grace, pace and space.

In line with its pampered past a recent and comprehensive engine service has just been completed. It is shod with five brand new period whitewall tyres, which suit the chassis perfectly, giving it a compliant and comfortable ride plus tenuous grip; something I can attest to, having driven her countless shake-down miles in the last month.
The mercedes will have a current 12 months MOT and includes the original and stamped service book. The owner’s handbook, radio and maintenance provenance are present in the car’s folder along with original sales brochures.

In summary a rare Mercedes, beautifully preserved and ready for many more miles of reliable nostalgic 1960’s motoring.
The Mercedes 1960’s 250 SEB Coupes have become in huge demand over the last few years and are one of the highest climbers in the Classic car market.

The Benz cognoscenti have always known how good the W111 coupés are, seeking them out long before the trendies adopted the cars in the 1980s; at one time it seemed as if every photographer in Notting Hill owned one. Beautifully built, rare and timelessly handsome, the coupés are fully deserving of classic status.

History
The date of the introduction of the W111 Series Mercedes SE Coupe was carefully chosen. It was not as usual an international automobile show, this time it was the opening of the Daimler-Benz Museum in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim on Feb. 24th, 1961 and the celebration of the company’s 75th anniversary. With its pillar-less side glass, a hallmark of almost all coupes coming out of Stuttgart in future, and wraparound front and rear windows, the car was a statement of exquisite taste and should remain in production till 1971.
The cabriolet was launched a little later at the Frankfurt International Automobile Show in September 1961.
The chassis had to be strengthened on the sides due to the coupe’s pillar-less design. Both sedan and coupe had roughly the same length, but the coupe was 5 cm (2 in) wider and 8.5 cm (3.3 in) lower. Next to chassis and engine, the only other parts that were shared with the sedan were the head lights and the radiator grille. Powered by a silky smooth six cylinder engine the car is capable of over 100mph and keeps up with modern traffic with ease.
The luggage area was huge for a coupe and the interior generous for a two-door vehicle. Seats were thick, wide and covered with leather. From the beginning the coupe had an aura of class and dignity and for the first time it was possible to travel in a Mercedes coupe with four passengers in comfort. The interior of the car was a feast for the eyes (and the nose). Not only the seats were covered with top quality leather, also the door trim, the dashboard cover, the rear shelf and even the inside of the glove compartment used the same material. The dashboard fascia, the instrument housing and the loudspeaker cover were made of wood. Like in the Ponton coupe models one could choose between walnut, macassar or burl walnut veneer. The instrument-layout was a departure from the sedan version, it was copied from the 300SL roadster, with speedometer and odometer to the left and right and secondary instruments for oil-pressure, fuel and water in the centre.
The cabriolet had been developed in the tradition of Daimler-Benz to offer a special and elegant open top two-door version of their six-cylinder executive cars. Although they were produced alongside the sedans, many parts had been manually assembled, so that one can say these cars were the last hand built cars of Daimler-Benz, taken the 600 aside. They offered a quality unmatched by its rivals and even successors.

1991 ISDERO IMPERATOR 108i GULLWING - DD CLASSICS

SATURDAY SHOWROOM STAR
Image result for DD Classics logo

1991 ISDERO IMPERATOR 108i GULLWING
Produced in tiny numbers during a production span of less than 9 years, ending in 1993, here is a truly exclusive supercar for the connoisseur.
In summer 1991, the car was delivered to an authorized ISDERA-dealer in Japan. The car was ordered as a left hand drive, but the exhausts ended at the right side. Only 13 series 2 were ever made, two of them were sold in Japan.
The striking gullwing coachwork on a tubular steel chassis is powered by the highly regarded Mercedes-Benz M119 5-Litre V8. The combination of super-lightweight construction and outrageous power, results in astounding performance.
From the pilots chair one gains the impression that the quoted figures of 5 seconds to 60 mph and 176mph top speed are somewhat conservative! The reality is performance which feels nothing short of scorching by today’s standards and must have seemed unbelievable in comparison to its contemporaries.
At take off, the push-in-the-back sensation, combined with the blurred scenery suddenly rushing past the side-glass, literally takes the breath away. The noise too is jet-like!
Born out of the Mercedes-Benz CW311 design experiment of the late 1970’s. Eberhard Schulz, who formerly worked as an engineer for Mercedes-Benz, headed the company that designed the original concept and formed Isdera as his own brand to build supercars.
The traditional Silver Arrows paint color chosen for our car, cleverly emphasizes the highlights on the subtle body design with the black hide interior providing a sophisticated contrast.
With little more than 500 Km recorded, yet offered in road going order, here is an exceptional opportunity for the discerning collector to bring gravitas to even the most exclusive line up.

1960 MERCEDES BENZ 220SE CABRIOLET - Thornley Kelham

FROM THE SHOWROOM
OF
Thornley Kelham: 1960 Mercedes Benz 220SE cabriolet

1960 MERCEDES BENZ 220SE CABRIOLET

INTRODUCTION

The owner of this car has a significant collection of post-war Bentleys and Mercedes, including some of the most important and beautiful cars they produced. Although much of his Mercedes work has previously been done by top German restorers, he decided to try us out after reading an article in Classic & Sportscar (link hereThe 1960 220SE cabrio was the last in the line of the ‘Ponton’ models; in SE form introducing an early form of Bosch mechanical fuel injection. In right hand drive cabriolet form it is a rare car – only 26 were made. The car arrived in a shabby but ‘cool’ condition, but this collector is meticulous and was very clear on what was needed – a complete restoration to top standards with various upgrades – sound proofing, air conditioning (not standard to the car) music system, etc. This ultimately led to a major re-engineering decision – to convert the original column change transmission to a six-speed modern BMW ‘box with floor gearchange….
 PREPARATION
As with all of our projects the entire car is photographed closely and comprehensively.  This proves invaluable when the time comes to rebuild the car. The next stage is carefully to dismantle the car, logging all parts missing, broken or damaged, which again helps the flow of the project as we can begin to source replacement parts at this early stage. The parts and sub assemblies from the car are then labeled ready for individual attention in our various in-house departments.

METALWORK

Because of the type of construction of this particular Mercedes i.e. a monocoque, (meaning without a separate chassis) we decided with the owner to remove all paint, underbody sealers and any corroded metal by subjecting the entire body of the car to a 7 - stage dipping process. It is however, vital that no aluminium remains on the car for this process, and the 220SE has a very substantial cast aluminium front screen surround and 'A' pillar assembly which proved very difficult to remove!
When the Mercedes returned from this process it was clear that the car was in a much worse state structurally than we had expected. The rear of the car had very significant corrosion problems; the front half of the car proving to be in much better order. We made a full assessment of the work and parts required, which included two outer and inner new rear wings, various sections to remake the rear chassis and sections of the boot floor, and one front wing.
Since this is a production car, albeit made in relatively small numbers (26 in RHD), it is generally more cost-effective to purchase ‘pattern’ panels , despite the amount of work needed to ensure the perfect fit. We decided to visit the supplier in Germany to ensure we received the best possible replacement parts.  Once these arrived, the painstaking task of removing the old metal began. Only by carefully offering up the replacement panels throughout the job could we ensure perfectly even gaps on all panels was achieved. Once we had a complete and solid shell we fitted all opening panels, complete with their locks and seals. At the same time the chrome plating was sent to be stripped down to the brass, which we then fitted to the car, making any necessary alterations without fear of damaging the eventual chrome finish. With the panels ‘dry fitted’ with all the brass, our body and paint guys cast an eye over the complete shell to ensure they were happy with the fit and finish of the dry fit. The body was then dismantled again and passed through to our body and paint shop, and the brass (over 100 separate pieces) finally sent for chrome plating.
As mentioned above, this serious collector had a very clear specification which included:
  • 14" rims
  • 6-speed transmission, hydraulically operated, with floor gear change
  • Air conditioning to maintain a specified cabin temperature even in hot spells in South Africa (the car’s eventual home)
  • Modern sound system
  • Electric power steering
  • Long range fuel tank.
These were the key upgrades in a very detailed specification.

STEERING AND TRANSMISSION

The steering components have been completely overhauled or replaced as necessary, with new dampers and track rod end joints. The steering box has been stripped and all bearings replaced, bushes manufactured and the whole unit painted. The column has been sent to a specialist for conversion to electric assistance. A 6-speed BMW transmission has been modified to fit; this included manufacturing an intermediate plate to mate the gearbox to the engine, which was done in our machine shop in-house.  This also involved modifying the pedal box so that the clutch pedal operates a master cylinder that in turn operates a slave cylinder operating a modified clutch thrust bearing arm. New mountings brackets have been fabricated to support the unit.

BRAKES, WHEELS AND TYRES

With the four brake drums skimmed, new linings with rebuilt wheel cylinders and a new servo all linked together with new lines, the brakes are as new. We sourced new Mercedes wheels and trims 1" taller then standard, to help achieve a relaxed and quiet cruising experience when coupled with the 6 speed transmission. We had to re-profile the boot floor to accommodate a larger spare wheel.

AIR-CONDITIONING

This car did not have an air conditioning system when new, so we set about designing a bespoke system from scratch. We began with the compressor - an unsightly unit so we had to re-locate the dynamo (we have had it re-engineered into a dynator to cope with all the upgrades) and placed the compressor below the dynator on a specially made bracket that incorporates the engine mounting. Next we made several modifications to the front shut panel of the car to make room for the condenser radiator and the necessary high output electric fan. To be able to keep the evaporator and both fans engine-side of the bulkhead we relocated the battery to the boot. Our design allows us to draw air into the evaporator from the cabin making a very efficient system.  Next it was a case of carefully locating the outlets in the passenger cabin to ensure a comfortable control of the cooled air.

ENGINE

The engine has been  completely rebuilt including a reground crank, new bearings and pistons, the head skimmed and  a full set of new valves fitted. New seals and gaskets are fitted throughout. The rear axle had the same treatment, including new bearings, seals and gaskets throughout.

PAINTWORK

We pay a great deal of care and attention to all our paintwork – in both the areas of the car you can see and those you cannot, and we began by mounting the Mercedes onto a rollover jig which afforded our painter perfect access to the underside and interior of the car. We then ensure absolute cleanliness of all the steel surfaces The shell is then coated with an epoxy primer throughout, and the undersides then coated with a modern two part anti-stone chip coating. This is in turn coated with a two pack semi-gloss black paint finish.
Our attention then turns to the interior, engine bay and inside the boot. In these areas the epoxy primer is rubbed down and then painted in several coats of two-pack semi-gloss black top coat.  When it comes to the main body shell and its panels and once a two-tone colour scheme had been chosen large panels our sent to our client along with a leather sample. Once these are agreed we move on to the primer stages and this involves firstly applying two or three applications of a two part high quality primer and then a ground coat colour and then because this car is two-tone the doors are put back on just to insure the break in the two colours is in line all down the side of the car. Then after careful masking they are then removed and the first of the solid two-part top-coat colours is then applied and after reversing the masking the second colour is applied.
We then treat all paintwork to a meticulous polish to ensure we always achieve a glass-like finish.

INTERIOR

The interior of these cars is a wonderful place to be. This particular car had not been used for many years but spent a period of its life as a wedding car – and the stilettos had done some damage! Nevertheless, close inspection of the leather with our client led to the decision that the interior as a whole could be saved by letting several panels of new leather of matching grain, and then a complete re-colouring of the interior in a colour which was both reasonably close to the orignal, and complementary to the new paint colours.  The hood frame was refurbished and then fitted with a high quality triple layered hood in double duck fabric with a headlining in alcantara. We also sourced a pair of headrests, had them retrimmed and recoloured, and fitted into the front seats.
The car is now looking for a lucky new owner.

1978 MERCEDES BENZ 600 SWB

Description

The Merecedes 600 needs no introduction at all, It was a beautiful yet imposing technological tour de force and for that reason, famous owners of the 600 have included the Pope and celebrities such as Coco Chanel, Hugh Hefner, Elizabeth Taylor, John Lennon, George Harrison, Karen Carpenter, Jay Kay, Aristotle Onassis, Jack Nicholson, Simon Spies, Ronnie Wood, Bob Jane, Frank Packer, Elvis Presley, Rowan Atkinson and Jeremy Clarkson.
Notable heads of state included Park Chung-hee, Josip Broz Tito, Nicolae Ceauşescu, Pol Pot, Enver Hoxha, Francois (Papa Doc) Duvalier, Leonid Brezhnev, Ferdinand Marcos (who owned four, including a Landaulet, a 1981 bulletproof and a six-door version.),[5] Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-Il also owned a landaulet (both seen in the 65th anniversary parade in Pyongyang on October 10, 2010), and Sadaam Hussein, who owned a long roof landaulet that was recovered after the fall of Baghdad today owned by the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles.[6] Iranian Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and the royal court owned multiple 600 models.[citation needed] Former Chinese Foreign Minister Chen Yi, Deng Xiaoping, wife of the first Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai - Deng Yingchao, and the former King of Cambodia Norodom Sihanouk, all used the 600.[7] The first Senegalese regime (1960–1980) under president Leopold Sedar Senghor had three 600s, a short wheel base, a long wheel base, and a Landaulet, later replaced by the W126 based Carat Limousine.[citation needed]
Religious leader Guru Maharaj Ji owned one,[citation needed] as did Colombian, drug dealer Pablo Escobar, a LWB six door 600.[citation needed] destroyed in an attack on Escobar in 1988 in Medellin.[citation needed]
In cinema the Mercedes 600 was featured in the James Bond films, most notably as transport of the villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld in On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Diamonds Are Forever. Kamal Khan is also seen leaving Sotheby's in a 600 in Octopussy. In television, a Mercedes Benz 600 limousine was used by fictional Channing/Gioberti family matriarch Angela Channing in the American television series Falcon Crest. Images of the car driving from San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge to the Falcon Crest vineyard were featured in the opening credits of the first four seasons.
This particular example is finished in Steel Blue with Sumptuous Blue Velour, the mileage of 49000 miles is believed to be correct and the condition would certainly testify to this.

Colour:Blue

Cobalt Blue Metallic with Grey leather, Just opening the door on this car, slowly glancing ones eyes over the facia, switchgear, seat facings, and door furniture, the sensation builds quickly of being surrounded by German precision engineering and build quality at its peak. Only 2677 Grossers were ever built between 1963 and 1981, and was believed to be the most expensive saloon car in production at that time. Seats, windows, heater vents, door and boot locking are all hydraulically operated resulting in total smoothness of operation. The 6.3 V8, coupled to the 4 speed auto gearbox produces effortless torque, with the lazy V8 burble as the perfect backdrop ! A favourite of the stars with the likes of Jay Kay, Jeremy Clarkson, Bernie Eccelstone, Elizabeth Taylor and the Pope all having owned such, some in LWB Pullman or Laundulette form. Much expenditure has been lavished on this car in recent times at marque expert John Haynes, West Sussex, with a superbly comprehensive history file bulging with invoices to accompany. Huge road presence with the stack headlamps, double deck bumpers and tall vertical grille make this car stand out and gain respect. Very rare in RHD, and even rarer in this condition. The absolute pinnacle of automotive engineering and excellence at its best - you only live once ! May P/X, £129,950

1964-1981 MERCEDES-BENZ 600

Overview

Mercedes threw everything but the kitchen sink at this technical tour de force, designed to be bought by governments rather than mere business magnates. They weighed in at 2.5 tonnes (or more for the long wheelbase seven-seater Pullman), and that was before the bullet-proof glass was added. There’s air suspension, vacuum central locking, two heating and ventilation systems, and to haul it around, a new 6.3-litre V8 engine with Bosch fuel injection. The limo stayed in production for 18 years and notched up a remarkable number of sales.

1966 MERCEDES-BENZ 250SE CABRIOLET - BONHAMS AUCTIONS @ BEAULIEU AUTOJUMBLE SALE

With promise of a return to warm weather in September, we look forward to to the Beaulieu International Autojumble and especially Bonhams Auction, where we find our Classic of the Day.
It's some Germanic charm that tempts us today and if the promised sunny weather returns a may tempt quite a few bids.

1966 Mercedes-Benz 250SE Cabriolet Chassis no. 111.023-10-085213 Engine no. 1290-1002005072

  • First shown at Frankfurt in 1965, the new S-Class Mercedes-Benz range was outwardly distinguishable from preceding models by a sleeker bodyshell with lower roof and waistlines, and increased glass area. All models featured similar all-independent suspension, as well as four-wheel disc brakes and power-assisted steering. However, although the saloon used this 'New Generation' bodyshell, the Coupé and Cabriolet kept the timelessly elegant coachwork that had debuted back in 1960 on the 220SEb. The latter had moved Mercedes-Benz's styling into the modern era; longer than their predecessors, these elegant cars featured a wider radiator shell, wrap-around windscreen, enlarged rear window and vertically positioned twin headlamps, all of which were carried over to the 250SE Coupé and Cabriolet. As befitted top-of-the-range luxury models, the duo came equipped with automatic transmission, air conditioning, electric windows and stereo radio as standard.

The 250SE employed a fuel-injected version of Mercedes-Benz's new, overhead-camshaft, seven-bearing 'six' displacing 2,496cc and developing 150bhp at 5,600rpm. There was a choice of four-speed manual or automatic transmissions, while the rear suspension featured Mercedes-Benz's hydro-pneumatic compensating spring. Thus equipped, the 250SE was good for 120mph, with 60mph reachable in 12 seconds, a substantial improvement on the superseded 220SE's figures. When the 280SE 3.5 ceased production in 1971, its passing marked the end of this long-established body style. Today all examples of these classic Coupés and Cabriolets are highly sought after.

This left-hand drive 250SE has the four-speed manual gearbox preferred by enthusiast owners because of their lower intermediate ratios, which make for crisper acceleration and a more exciting drive. Restored over the last five years and currently registered in Cyprus, the car comes with sundry bills for maintenance and servicing by a Mercedes-Benz specialist in Limasol for the period 2011 to 2014. Components replaced during this period include the rear springs, power steering seals, ignition coil, fuel pump, cylinder head gasket, exhaust valve seals, radiator and the brake master cylinder in addition to routine service parts: filters, spark plugs, ignition points, etc. In addition, we are advised that the car has been repainted and under-sealed; the convertible hood renewed; the interior re-trimmed with Mercedes-Benz leather to original specification; and numerous other miscellaneous repairs carried out, though there are no bills available for these works. The provision of air conditioning (removable if required) and a new radio/CD player (original available) are the only notified deviations from factory specification. It should be noted that 100,000 kilometres should be added to the current odometer reading of approximately 9,000 kilometres to arrive at the correct total. Finished in Canary White with turquoise leather interior, this recently restored 250SE is described as in generally very good condition and offered with Cypriot registration papers, Cypriot roadworthiness certificate (expires May 2015) and the aforementioned bills.
