The Quattroporte Series two represents the zenith of the shared engineering between Maserati and their 1970s Citroen owners. After the traditional V8-engined Quattroporte One, the replacement must have appeared initially to come from outer space.
Using the complex mechanical specification of the Citroen SM as its base, the Bertone-designed Series 2 added luxury on a grand scale with its modern take on the traditional leather and wood interior. The quad-cam V6 engine (to later SS specification in this example), coupled to the five-speed Citroen transaxle gave the car front wheel drive. The LHM system provided a silky smooth ride, delicate steering and powerful brakes, giving the car a dynamic sophistication that is hard to beat even today.
Alas, the second series Quattroporte was born during a tumultuous time for Maserati. Citroen were forced to give up their ownership, which eventually passed to De Tomaso. The latter sold off the last few Quattroporte twos while commissioning his own replacement, wishing to distance himself from the Citroen influence. Low production numbers meant that each of the series two cars effectively remained a prototype. Only 13 examples are known to exist now and therefore this car gives the owner entry to a very exclusive club.
It is also a blue-chip entry to every Concours event on the planet. This car has already been featured in the Cartier Style et Luxe at Goodwood more than once and is a winner of the UK Maserati Club Concours. However, to suggest that this is just a concours car does it a disservice. The current owner enjoys using the car as intended, taking it on various adventures during his ownership including most recently a trip to Switzerland last year for the Maserati International Rally, allowing the organisers to present a full set of Quattroportes to celebrate 50 years of the model.
For sale in immaculate condition and on the button – probably the only Series two in the world of which that can be said. For sale by the private owner, an enthusiastic member of the UK Maserati Club. The Quattroporte Series two represents the zenith of the shared engineering between Maserati and their 1970s Citroen owners.
