1913 MINERVA TYPE DD TOURER

Delivered new to Australia, this car was discovered near Sydney in 1962 and shipped to California, where it was restored in the late 1980s. In 1998, it was sold to the UK. Although the body carries plates showing Cann & Co, London, a company apparently associated with Minerva, it is believed the coachwork is actually by Phizackerley Coachworks of Sydney, which of course ties in nicely with the car's original delivery destination. It seems however, that the rear portion of the body was re-made as part of the restoration. This has been very nicely carried out, and the whole car is in lovely condition and running well.

1935 Alvis Speed 20 SC Charlesworth Saloon - Robin Lawton

CLASSIC OF THE DAY
FROM

1935 Alvis Speed 20 SC Charlesworth Saloon

£58,950

Introduced in 1932, The Alvis Speed 20 was to earn an enviable reputation for its performance and high quality. The final version, designated ‘SC’, appeared in 1935 and benefited from an enlarged engine, displacing 2.8 litres. Further improvements included a syncromesh transmission and independent front suspension. The model was eventually superseded by the Speed 25 in 1937, by which time some 1165 examples of the earlier car had been produced.
A variety of coachwork styles were available and without doubt, the Charlesworth saloon was among the most handsome.

This fine example was first registered in Buxton, Derbyshire, in February 1935. Between 1979 – 1986, the car was the subject of  a total ‘body-off’ restoration to a very high standard – the work being fully documented and substantiated by photographs and many invoices in the extensice file of paperwork supplied.

Since the restoration was completed, only around 12,000 miles have been covered and the car has been meticulously maintained and continually improved. Recent work has included  replacement engine mountings, new clutch, driveshaft couplings, new rear springs, carburettor, brake and steering overhauls, wheels rebuilt, new stainless steel exhaust system and much more.

A correct ‘matching numbers’ car, with known history since new, it is sure to delight the most discerning enthusiast. With ample power and the ability to hold its own in modern traffic, this is an ideal motor car for longer distance touring and events.  It  is featured on page 180 of Kenneth Day’s book ‘Alvis – The Story Of The Red Triangle’

1977 FERRARI 512 BB - FOSKERS

SUPERCAR SPOTLIGHT

1977 FERRARI 512 BB

The Ferrari 512 BB (also known as the ‘BB512’) was launched in 1976 as more of an update to the Berlinetta Boxer, rather than a new model. Its name didn’t follow Ferrari convention, instead borrowing the format used for the Dino and GT4 at the time, referring to ‘5 litre, 12 cylinder’, rather than the individual cylinder capacity.
The torquier 5.0-litre Ferrari flat-12 made the ‘new’ Boxer more responsive and flexible. A revised gearbox was a significant improvement over the 365 BB, and many of the latter were subsequently upgraded in period to use this transmission. Ferrari also reduced the pressure in the shift mechanism itself, making gear changes in the 512 BB slicker than in its predecessor.
On the outside, the exterior styling changes were minimal but noticeable. Wider rear arches accommodated the fatter nine-inch tyres, there was a more pronounced kink in the join between cabin and rear clip, and the Ferrari’s nose was revised with a shallow spoiler to reduce lift at very high speeds.
Another telling feature of the 512 BB is the pair of NACA ducts in the lower panels ahead of the rear wheels - these were added to funnel air to the engine bay. At the rear, the three tail lights on each side were swapped to two pairs of larger items; with precisely the same reduction in the number of tail pipes for the exhaust.
The reaction from the motoring press to the Ferrari 512 BB was that all of the smaller changes added up to a substantial improvement over the 365 BB. As Mel Nichols put it in his single-model book on the Berlinetta Boxer: ‘This was a Boxer with more charm as well as more fight, more poise as well as more spirit’.
This Ferrari 512 BB was ordered in early 1977, specified with Nero 20-B-50 paintwork, Beige (code VM 3234) leather and Corda carpets. A copy of the order receipt from Ferrari S.p.A. accompanies the car and confirms this original combination.
The Berlinetta Boxer’s first owner was a Malaysian businessman who lived in London at the time. He kept the car for just two months before selling it to renowned Ferrari collector - and current Chairman of the Ferrari Owners Club of Great Britain - Mr Nigel Chiltern-Hunt. While in his ownership, the Boxer was registered as ‘BB 25’ and was featured in Mel Nichols’ Berlinetta Boxer book that shows this registration plate.
Two years later, the 512 BB was sold on again, this time to a doctor in Surrey. At the time of the car’s first MOT test in 1980 - for which the certificate remains in the history file - the odometer read just 4586 miles. In 1982, this 512 BB became one of only two targa conversions by Emilio Garcia’s Autokraft business - and the only example in right-hand drive. Within the last year, it has been painstakingly reverted back to the original Berlinetta body style.
In 2007 the car was sold on to its fourth keeper - a prominent British businessman and cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. He continued to spend whatever was required on this wonderful Boxer, driving it over some 2000 miles before selling it on to the fifth keeper in October 2011. Most recently, the car has received a full engine-out service and cambelt replacement at Foskers.
The documented history of this Ferrari 512 BB is simply outstanding. Within the substantial file of paperwork are service invoices, MOT certificates and sales records for virtually every year of the car’s life. The third keeper owned the car from late 1979 until early 2007, and he spared absolutely no expense in the maintenance of this wonderful Boxer. The 512 BB was used frequently, but only ever covered between 500 and 1000 miles each year. The total mileage is therefore remarkably low, and the odometer now reads just 26000.
This is a truly beautiful 512 Berlinetta Boxer that has magnificent provenance. It is presented in its original and arresting factory colour combination and is accompanied by a complete and continuous ownership and mileage record from new. The interior is entirely original, save for the superb new carpets throughout.
The Berlinetta Boxers are thrilling Ferraris to drive, not to mention exceptionally rare cars in right-hand drive. Furthermore, these flat-12s are appreciating every month, so from an investment point of view the 512 BB is fantastic choice.

1946 JAGUAR MARK FOUR 31/2 LITRE

Description

Sensing that war was imminent, William Lyons phased out car production at his SS Cars Ltd factory and focused on helping out the war effort. He continued to produce sidecars and trailers for the British armed forces and carried out repair work on RAF bombers.
These military contracts helped keep his company afloat during the war, and once the hostilities ended, they were ready to get back to producing motor cars, and with a name change, Jaguar Cars Ltd. was created.

Prewar sales for the S.S. products had been low especially in the United States. However, with a nation ravaged by war, Lyons had to press for this export market. Taking advantage of the strong U.S. economy and a new interest in elegant, well-made British automobiles (especially from returning Gi's), Jaguar quickly set up a dealer network across the Atlantic.

Jaguars cars were in fact so popular that one of the first 16 sold overseas went to actor Clark Gable.

The Jaguar Mark IV, in fact pronounced mark four, was built by Jaguar from 1945 to 1949. It was a relaunch of a pre-Second World War model made by SS Cars Ltd from 1936.

The 3½ Litre model we have on offer here was manufactured in1946, being essentially the same body and chassis as the 2½ Litre but the larger 125 bhpengine giving far better performance.
The rear axle ratio was also changed to 4.25:1 as opposed to the 4.5:1 on the 2½ Litre models.
Purchased by the last owner in 1998 'FNP' remains in good order. The chrome work is generally very good together with the mellowed interior. Interior door panels and carpets are also very good.
'As new' headcloth, working rear blind and lovely instrument dash display.
The car in general carries an older mellowed patina expected of an older restored motor car.
Within the vehicles large history folder is contained a number of interesting articles.
To include....
Period 'Buff Logbook' dated circa 1960's
Number of Autocar articles detailing the Jaguar 3 ½ model.
1948 Autocar road test on the 3 ½
1946 Jaguar 3 ½ Instruction manual.
Large selection of photographs showing the car at various events over the last 20 years.
If only the feeling achieved when you drive such a majestic car could be bottled!
This iconic looking motor car is currently on display in our museum

1971 AC 428 FRUA COUPE

The ultra-rare AC Frua or AC 428 built by AC Cars at the legendry Thames Ditton production facilities. With its Italian body, British chassis, and American big block V8 it is a true hybrid. Production of the CoupĂ© variant was only 31 right hand drive motorcars.
Our car # CF57 was supplied new to Mr A Worthington of Northolt, Middlesex on the 9th June 1971 who commissioned the car to be built in AC Mist Silver Metallic with Black Connolly Hide Interior – VM8500, as the car is presented today. We understand that the motorcar has had only five owners from new as documented in the historical chassis file.
The second keeper, Mr K Erskine of Harrow, Middlesex purchased the AC on the 3rd August 1978 and under his stewardship continued the AC’s maintenance at AC Cars Ltd and in 1990 commenced a detailed restoration by the highly regarded AC specialists Uniclip Automotive. During Mr Erskine’s ownership expenditure exceeded some GBP 90,000.00. The car has continued to receive various & frequent service work over the last 8 years.
On Hexagon Classics acquisition last year, we commenced a detailed mechanical programme and interior re trim, using the correct Connolly hides. On completion, we instructed Thunder Road Speed Shop, who together with Uniclip Automotive are regarded as the UK’s leading experts on the AC 428, to carry out an independent report of the 428 which is presented in the cars’ large historical chassis file.
