1966 ALFA ROMEO BERTONE SPRINT 2600

This was the Flagship model of Alfa’s range in the 1960’s. It has rich dark red coachwork and new soft cream leather. There are only 64k miles on the clock and it is mechanically sound having been newly serviced and MoT’d by us. The RHD version is pretty rare.
These cars were designed by Giugiaro (very early in his career) and with coachwork by Bertone they are Italian design through and through. The car (Chassis 854481) has a superb 6 cylinder twin overhead cam all aluminium engine (2585 cc) and excellent gearbox and brakes. It spent some years in Edinburgh before going South and was virtually laid up for 12 years hence accounting for its low mileage. It was refurbished in 2006 and has had some £7k spent on it. The coachwork is good with one or two minor age-related cracks in the paint finish and the bright work is fine too. It drives superbly. At this price it is something of a snip for a 1960’s Alfa Romeo which must appreciate like the others.
Price - £28,350

1939 BENTLEY 4.25 LITRE (Overdrive)

During the late 1920's and early 1930's Bentley ran into grave financial trouble and by 1931 Rolls-Royce had stepped in and bought the assets and goodwill of the defunct company and formed a new one, Bentley Motors (1931) Ltd. Rolls-Royce had considered the Bentley marque to be a growing threat to their future success, but following their purchase decided to continue the Bentley name, albeit under their own stewardship, taking the company in an entirely new direction with the creation of the Silent Sports Car or Derby Bentley. In 1933 the new Bentley 3.5 Litre model was released and was an instant success. The combination of effortless power and style met with almost universal praise. It was powered by a developed twin carburettor version of Rolls-Royces own 20/25 model and was installed in a low 126 inch wheelbase chassis that basically remained unaltered until the cessation of production in 1939 due to the outbreak of hostilities. Synchromesh was present on third and fourth gears and the Derby's were fitted with a cross flow cylinder head and superb servo assisted brakes, encapsulating all of the perfection of Rolls-Royce engineering in this small sporting Bentley. Fitting of individual coachwork by approved body builders continued in true Rolls-Royce fashion giving potential buyers a great deal of choice in the look of their new motor car. 1936 saw further improvements with the introduction of the 4.25 Litre model when production of the 3.5 Litre unit ceased. Steady development continued throughout the cars production and in late 1938 even more power was obtained when the overdrive models were introduced, which were known as the MX/MR series cars. The original Bentley sales literature outlined the key improvements that improved the overdrive cars performance which included the provision of an overdrive gearbox which would allow the car to attain a greater maximum speed without exceeding maximum engine revolutions. The steering was of improved design, providing greater control under all conditions. Modified gear ratios and slight engine modifications also improved acceleration under certain conditions. The slower running engine coupled with the over drive top gear resulted in greater silence and smoothness. And finally centralised chassis lubrication and automatic shock absorbers with over-riding hand control were fitted. The MX/MR models were truly the ultimate incarnation on the Derby chassis and are still very much sought after some seventy years on. Just two hundred chassis examples were created, finding their way to lucky owners with a variety of coachwork designs. Chassis No B72MR which we are currently offering for sale was completed in November of 1938, to the original order of Mr G.S. Bordrick. It was fitted with sedanca coupe coachwork by James Young, this specific design believed to be one of just two cars built in this style, the other being Chassis No B86MR. It was retained by Mr Brodrick until 1940 when it was purchased by Harold Radford and Co Ltd of South Kensington. It remained with them for ten years until becoming the property of Mrs H Sneyd of Warminster in Wiltshire and then it changed hands again in 1958 and 1961, being sold to Mr Basil Roy of London and then Major P.R.J. Everidge respectively. In more recent times it was sold at auction in London in the early 1990's to a collector in the south of England who retained it until 1999. At this point B72MR was acquired by Frank Dale & Stepsons and then supplied by us to a collector in Europe where it remained until returning to London very recently. At a time unknown, the original sedanca coupe roof was sealed and the car was turned into a fixed head coupe. However very recently, the car was returned to its original appearance and specification, with a sedanca roof. Finished in black with tan leather interior, the car remains in very nice condition and in our opinion is extremely attractive, the tail mounted trunk adding great elegance to the overall appearance of the car. This stylish and unique Derby Bentley has been prepared in our workshops as per our normal policy and is ready for its next fortunate owner.

Snippets: Edna Best – Star of Stage & Screen

GOH9 was ordered by Edna Best (aka Mrs Herbert Marshall) who in the 1920s & 1930s was a star on the British Stage & Screen prior to her move to America in the late 1930s. She wed two of her co stars and her produce with each divorce being associated with scandal! She met her 1st husband William Seymour Beard (1986/1989) in 1920 when they co-starred in Peter Pan, they had twin boys James & John but the marriage ended in divorce in 1928- with Edna remarrying Herbert “Bart” Marshall in November 1928. Bart & Edna also co-starred in various stage & screen productions – “The Calendar”, “There’s Always Juliet” & “Michael & Mary – Their Secret” to mention a few. In the late 1930s Edna & Bart had settled in America with their daughter Sarah but again their marriage failed, due in part to Bart’s “friendships” with other actresses – including Gloria Swanson! In February 1940 they divorced with the Judge Foley presiding who just 5 minutes later conducted the marriage of Edna to Nat Wolff – her agent! A fortnight later the same Judge married Bart Marshall to Lee Russell Brandt (ex-wife of the singer Eddy Brandt who in 1938 had sued Bart for $50,000 for “alienation of his wife’s affections”!). In 1936 GOH9 is registered at 3 Shepherd Close, Upper Brook Street in London – which had been built in 1933/5 to the designs of W. E. Masters and named after Edward Shepherd architect & developer of the 18th Century – his customers included Benjamin Hoare (Boreham House) Duke of Chandos (Shaw House & Cannons). The next we know of GOH9 is in 1947 when she is noted as being with Baillie & Hurn of Hopehill in Glasgow, this company traded as motor engineers, motor agents and car hire with their earlier premises being at John Street in Glasgow – the street being named for several municipal magnates holding office in 1785.

1955 LAMBORGHINI DL25- HYMAN LTD (USA)

FARM FRIDAY
FROM
HYMAN LTD

1955 LAMBORGHINI DL25

By now, even casual automotive enthusiasts are familiar with the story of how Ferruccio Lamborghini got involved in the car business in the 1960s. But for those who need a refresher, the tale tells us that Mr. Lamborghini had a bit of a spat with Enzo Ferrari that started with the former complaining about the quality of sports car the latter had provided. In response, Enzo arrogantly brushed Ferruccio aside telling him to stick to making tractors and leave sports cars to the experts… or something to that effect. Of course, this did not sit well with a fellow fiery Italian and Mr. Lamborghini set off to build a sports car that would beat Ferrari at his own game. Exactly how much of that is true we’ll never know for sure, but Lamborghini certainly did get Ferrari’s attention with cars like the exquisitely built 400GT and the jaw dropping Miura. But the details of Mr. Lamborghini’s tractor production are usually just a side note to the story. He was, in fact, a very successful industrialist and the tractors that bear his name are still in production today.
The company was founded in 1948 as not just a manufacturer of tractors but also of military and industrial engines. Using a modified Morris Six engine as a basis, Lamborghini devised and patented a clever fuel atomizer that allowed the engine to be started on gasoline, and then switched over to run on diesel. This allowed his engines to be easily started in cold temperatures, negating the worry of hard-starting diesels and giving them a distinct competitive advantage over those with pure diesel engines.Lamborghini Trattori grew quickly, developing many specialized models as well as proprietary engines and power units, becoming one of the largest agricultural manufacturers in Italy. While separate from automotive operations, the tractor business has been steadily successful and remains in business, still producing specialized equipment for orchards, vineyards and other specialist farms around the world.
This delightful 1955 Lamborghini DL 25 is equipped with a 2-cylinder diesel engine of Lamborghini’s own design that produces about 26 horsepower. Power is fed through the rear wheels, along with the addition of a belt-drive PTO which can power various accessories. Carefully restored, it presents in beautiful condition, finished in traditional Lamborghini Trattorired on the bodywork with a gray finish on the chassis and wheel hubs. Of course, this is a robust piece of agricultural equipment, so it is strictly business behind the wheel, but that is not to say there isn’t plenty of charm to be found in its simple styling. The very basic diesel engine has been well detailed with proper and well-executed finishes. This little Lambo runs well yet appears very correct and is pretty enough to show. If you’re an adventurous farmer with a penchant for vintage machinery, we’re sure it could even be put to work if you dare get it dirty.
Lamborghini never officially imported their tractors to North America, so they are a very rare sight on our shores.  Interesting, beautifully restored, and a wonderful conversation piece, this rare and delightful 26 horsepower Lamborghini would surely be a hit at just about any Italian car show; and would make a welcome addition to a collection of Italian cars or vintage agricultural implements.
