The Lotus Seven is a small, simple, lightweight two-seater open-top sports car produced by Lotus Cars (initially called Lotus Engineering) between 1957 and 1972.

It was designed by Lotus founder Colin Chapman, and has been considered the embodiment of the Lotus philosophy of performance through low weight and simplicity. The original model was highly successful with more than 2,500 cars sold, partly because of its attraction as a road legal car that could be used for Clubmans racing, but mainly because it was such fun.

The original Seven was designed in 1952 as a potential Riley engined Formula Two car for the 52/53 season but the project was later abandoned. However, after the Lotus Eleven entered limited production in 1957, the Seven was resurrected in the form that we all came to know and love. The Lotus Seven S2 followed in 1960 and was supplemented by the Lotus Super Seven S2 from 1961. The Super Seven initially used the larger Cosworth modified 1340cc Ford Classic engine and later examples were fitted with 1498cc or 1599cc engines.

The general layout of the Lotus Seven design has spawned a host of imitations on the kit car market, generally called Sevens or sevenesque roadsters. Many of those cars are still produced to this day.

This 1963, Lotus Super Seven Series 2, is powered by a 1498cc Ford Pre-Crossflow Cosworth engine. Presented in good condition, this car has recently returned from the States where, we are told, the last owner enjoyed his little Lotus for some 31 years. The car was restored in the 1990s, with we are led to believe, the engine, transmission and gearbox being rebuilt. At some point all the aluminium panelling was removed from the chassis and the chassis blasted, checked carefully, and painted before the car was re-panelled. Most of the panelling was replaced, apart from the rear quarter which was still in good order and the rest of the car painted and generally tidied. So pleased was the owner with the result, that the car was then subsequently promoted to a heated studio and used sparingly.

Over the years, with the very nature of the Seven, owners will change things to suit their own requirements, however the vendor believes this car to be particularly original and correct, with the ultra rare early instruments, the original stamped Serek 5 ½ gallon fuel tank and the proper carburettor as fitted.

Supplied with a Lotus Certificate of Provenance, V5c and a fresh MoT certificate issued before the sale, this car must be of consideration if you are interested in a Chapman designed car that inspired a generation..

MODEL HISTORY

NSU-Fiat was a German car manufacturer that produced Fiat vehicles under license at a plant acquired from NSU in Heilbronn from 1929 to 1957. In 1957, following a complicated litigation process over the right to use the by now increasingly high profile ‘NSU' name on passenger cars, the name used for the Fiat-designed cars was changed to Neckar, and with this name the company continued to produce Fiats in Germany until 1971.

The Neckar Weinsberg 500 was produced in two versions, the Limousette and Coupé, and was based on the Fiat Nuova 500 (1957-1977), with equal driving performance and handling characteristics. Introduced in March 1959 as the NSU/Fiat, 6,228 vehicles were manufactured from 1959 to 1963, with daily production peaking at 14 cars. The price was 3,840DM in 1959 and 3,620DM in 1962. 

The Coupe and the Limousette only differed in their rear window design: The coupé featured a wraparound panoramic rear screen, allowing only enough headroom above the rear seat for small children. The Limousette, however, had rear side windows and a steeper, conventional rear window like a small saloon, hence the name.

In contrast to the Autobianchi Bianchina (an Italian 500-based minicar), both Weinsberg versions were built from partially assembled car bodies with modifications to both front and rear panels. The front bonnet is higher, as is the wing profile, with finned rear wings and rear lights that are unique to the Weinsberg. The cars benefited from some equipment upgrades in character with a luxury version: a sunroof instead of a folding roof, special bumpers, standard two-tone paint and wheel covers, an ashtray in the dashboard, better upholstery fabrics, and wide pockets in the doors. Never officially intended for the UK market, only five RHD cars are known to exist. What's more, the survival rate of these Neckars has not been good, with only approximately 50 cars currently known to the Neckar Weinsberg register.

HISTORY FILE

Believed to be one of only five right-hand drive Neckar Weinsbergs in existence, this rare coupe was supplied in 1963 to Saint Helier, Jersey. In its early years the car changed hands between companies at the same address but was eventually sold to a lady with a Spanish surname. She owned the Neckar until it was confiscated in Alicante by Spanish customs in 1986, "in lieu of payment of fines". All of this is documented by the Jersey Archives.

As normal in these cases, the car was auctioned off to recover some revenue. Because of its age and illegality it was sold for ‘scrap', but fortunately went to a pioneer car collector and former president of the Veteran Car Club of Spain, Eugenio Martin Rubio. Eugenio had a very keen eye for the unusual and saved a lot of interesting cars from the crusher. The mileage of 31,000 miles is believed to be original.

The Neckar was parked up on jacks and remained untouched until 2008, when Eugenio began to sell off his collection. The vehicle was then purchased by the current owner who started the restoration process shortly after. The first stage was mechanical; a garage in Alicanti rebuilt the engine and gearbox in 2009. The project then remained on hold until 2013, at which point all aspects of the restoration were managed by the Spanish company, Italclassic.

The owner's philosophy was to build a show car with a focus on originality. The factory colour scheme, however, was changed to a more pleasing aesthetic, but only Fiat/Lancia colours were chosen. All major components are original with only consumables having been replaced. Some parts unique to the Neckar, such as mouldings and the rear screen, were re-made from scratch by a bodywork specialist named Marcos Blastor. Others fixtures such as the rear lights and badges came from swap meets, etc. throughout Europe.

1934 ROLLS-ROYCE 20/25 WINDOVERS LIMOUSINE

An unusual and interesting car for at least two reasons: Firstly, the car remained with one family from new until 2004 – 70 years! For the following ten years, the car was with one owner, who has cared for the car very well, taking it on several rallies, including two Continental ones, and it has been trouble free, performing nicely throughout. Secondly, the car has recently been repainted in its rather attractive and without doubt original colour. All-in-all a lovely car, slightly out of the ordinary, sound, in good order  running nicely and very appealing. Complete with fitted toolkit, rear-mounted trunk with fitted suitcases, a full set of 'Ace' wheel discs, correct lamps, etc. Serviced, prepared and MoT tested until February 2016.

Snippets:  Who is this Actress?

After a few years of ownership the first owner who was an engineer decided to give GHA16 to his wife, she was a musical comedy dancer/actress of some repute.  The earliest note of her appearance on the stage is in 1921 in a Charles B. Cochran production “The League of Notions”, starring alongside the beautiful, wealthy & scandalous Hungarian-American twins better known as the Dolly Sisters (protégés of G. Selfridge). In 1926 after just 5 years on the stage she was immortalised on the Murray cigarettes cards alongside fellow artistes such as Mary Pickford, Ivor Novello, Harold Lloyd & Norma Shearer and in 1927 her portrait was painted by Bernard Fleetwood-Walker & shown in the RBSA Spring Exhibition.  As an actress she was well known within the entertainment world for her menagerie which included Billy, her pet Budgerigar!  The only time she took from the stage was between 1929 & 1935 in order to devote time to their son.  In due course their son himself took to the stage with his first London appearance as a singer in Henry VII, he later emigrated to Canada where his acting career continued both on stage & TV.  After returning to the UK in the 1960s he took over the role of being the voice of Virgil Tracy in Thunderbirds!  And in 1977 he had a cameo appearance as Captain Forsyth in “The Spy Who Loved Me

”.

1959 EDSEL CORSAIR

A 1959 Edsel Corsair convertible, registration number OSU 778, engine number W9UR709457, yellow and white. One of only 1,342 manufactured this example has been in a collection for approximately 10 years. Having recently been the subject of a bare metal respray, this multiple prize winning Edsel has further benefited from the recent fitting of a bespoke exhaust system and new battery. Having been featured in numerous classic car magazines this strikingly presented yellow with white accents on the rear wings mirror the stylish interior which has some very unusual features including under dashboard mounted tissue dispenser and 45 rpm record player. This Corsair is believed to be the only known example in the United Kingdom and as such offers an exciting opportunity to a collector. V5C, MOT and tax exempt

1985 NAYLOR TF1700

A 1985 Naylor TF1700, registration number B8 DGT, chassis number SA9TFS1M1FA019, engine number 17V647AAH101906, car number 40, dark red. For anyone who is an MG TF enthusiast the name Naylor will be a familiar name as they are one of the principle restorers and suppliers of spare parts for these models. During the 1980s Naylor Brothers decided to launch an uprated version of the MG TF under their own name. They used an inhouse designed and built chassis with Austin Rover running gear and engine, clothed in a traditionally constructed ash and aluminium body. These cars should not be confused with a home built kit car as the Naylor badged cars were fully type approved, registered in their own right and had the backing of the Austin Rover Group. Only 100 cars were produced before production ceased and the rights were sold to Hutson who made a further 61 examples. This particular Naylor car number 40 has only covered 7,000 miles from new, with two private owners plus the supplying Jersey dealer. Beautifully presented in dark red with a red piped biscuit leather interior with matching dark red carpets, this Naylor's further refinements include a full weather hood kit, comprising a hood, a hood bag, a full tonneau cover and side screens, a wood rim steering wheel, a luggage rack and chrome wire wheels, which finish off the period look. Offered for auction with a large history file containing the original Jersey logbook, original photographs of the car under construction at the factory, original owner's handbook, workshop manual, Naylor & Hutson TF1700 story, numerous receipts from both its time in Jersey and England and past MOTs. This fastidiously maintained example, is barely run in with only 7,000 miles on the clock, and offers the next custodian vintage MG styling with modern reliability. V5C, MOT to March 2016

1938 MORRIS 8 SERIES 
Ex Post Office Engineers Van
A 1938 Morris 8 Series I ex GPO external utility engineers van, registration number EXM 972, chassis number S1/EPO 202394, engine number 209332, coachwork by Strachans Successors Ltd, body number 10002, green over black. This extremely rare GPO utility van, commission number U18690 went into service in London during March 1939. It would perform its duties throughout hostilities and was eventually decommissioned and sold into the civilian market 13 years later in 1952, to be used by a building firm in Scarborough. The vendor purchased the van from a car dealer in Portsmouth in 1966 for £25 to be used on his Cornish dairy farm. After two years the van was parked in one of his barns where it would remain for the next 28 years. It was removed from hibernation as a retirement project and was subsequently the subject of a nut and bolt restoration (photographs on file) which took three years to complete. Research carried out by the vendor and with kind assistance from the Morris Minor Register it has been able to ascertain that only 29 examples of this body type were built by Strachans Successors Ltd and it is believed this is the only known survivor. The vendor took great care to retain as many of the original components as possible during the restoration and in 2000 he was rewarded for his efforts with the van winning best of show at the West of England show. The van has been featured in Old Glory (February 2002 edition) amongst other publications and has been extensively shown at classic commercial & car events since the completion of the restoration. This charming and extremely rare light commercial is now reluctantly for sale due to the vendors advancing years and he now feels that the time is ready for someone else to cherish it.
