1934 ROLLS-ROYCE 20/25 WINDOVERS LIMOUSINE - The Real Car Co

THROUGH THE SHOWROOM DOOR
WHO WOULD DRIVE A CAR LIKE THIS?
 The Real Car Co Ltd.
COED Y PARC, BETHESDA, GWYNEDD, LL57 4YS, NORTH WALES

1934 ROLLS-ROYCE 20/25 WINDOVERS LIMOUSINE

An unusual and interesting car for at least two reasons: Firstly, the car remained with one family from new until 2004 – 70 years! For the following ten years, the car was with one owner, who has cared for the car very well, taking it on several rallies, including two Continental ones, and it has been trouble free, performing nicely throughout. Secondly, the car has recently been repainted in its rather attractive and without doubt original colour. All-in-all a lovely car, slightly out of the ordinary, sound, in good order  running nicely and very appealing. Complete with fitted toolkit, rear-mounted trunk with fitted suitcases, a full set of 'Ace' wheel discs, correct lamps, etc. Serviced, prepared and MoT tested until February 2016.

Snippets:  Who is this Actress?
After a few years of ownership the first owner who was an engineer decided to give GHA16 to his wife, she was a musical comedy dancer/actress of some repute.  The earliest note of her appearance on the stage is in 1921 in a Charles B. Cochran production “The League of Notions”, starring alongside the beautiful, wealthy & scandalous Hungarian-American twins better known as the Dolly Sisters (protégés of G. Selfridge). In 1926 after just 5 years on the stage she was immortalised on the Murray cigarettes cards alongside fellow artistes such as Mary Pickford, Ivor Novello, Harold Lloyd & Norma Shearer and in 1927 her portrait was painted by Bernard Fleetwood-Walker & shown in the RBSA Spring Exhibition.  As an actress she was well known within the entertainment world for her menagerie which included Billy, her pet Budgerigar!  The only time she took from the stage was between 1929 & 1935 in order to devote time to their son.  In due course their son himself took to the stage with his first London appearance as a singer in Henry VII, he later emigrated to Canada where his acting career continued both on stage & TV.  After returning to the UK in the 1960s he took over the role of being the voice of Virgil Tracy in Thunderbirds!  And in 1977 he had a cameo appearance as Captain Forsyth in “The Spy Who Loved Me
”.

1954 ROLLS ROYCE SILVER WRAITH - FRANK DALE & STEPSONS

"CLASSIC OF THE DAY"
Featuring
http://www.frankdale.com/images/frank_dale.gif
1954 ROLLS ROYCE SILVER WRAITH
 Coachbuilder :  Park Ward
Body Type :  Long Wheel Base Drophead Coupe
Colour :  Brewster Green and Cream
Trim :  Beige Leather

History :  Manufacture of Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars soon resumed in 1946 after World War II with production of the Silver Wraith. It was initially offered with the same engine dimensions as the pre-war Wraith and 4 ¼ Litre Bentley, but cylinder head design was entirely different, being cast in aluminium alloy and containing only the inlet valves; spent gases exhaust through valves in the cylinder block. Front suspension is by a robust coil spring twin fulcrum arm system, a much simplified development of Phantom III and Wraith equipment. It is mounted on a chassis frame with the same great strength, fitted with orthodox leaf springs at the rear. It came in two lengths, a standard 127 inch chassis and a long wheel base variant measuring 133 inches. The familiar delightful gear shift was retained with automatic transmission becoming an option from 1953 onwards. The automatic gearbox was effectively a refined and developed version of the General Motors design. The introduction of this innovation coincided with the widening of the cylinder bores to 3.625 inches. This allied to an unchanged stroke of 4.5 inches enlarged the engine capacity to 4566cc. The famous servo assisted braking system is partially hydraulic and the last cars have power assisted steering with a 4887cc engine. The Silver Wraith chassis were offered until 1959 and were always fitted with handmade individually crafted coachwork. The war years had certainly taken their toll on the coach building industry in England, with many famous names ceasing to exist by the mid 1940’s. However some of the most established companies did survive, such as H.J. Mulliner, Park Ward and Hooper who between them were responsible for designing and creating some of the most elegant and stylish coachwork fitted to the Silver Wraith chassis. A total of 1,886 Silver Wraiths were produced between 1946 and 1959 and were ordered by a diverse cross section of customers, including governments who purchased them for Presidential use. A number of cars were purchased by nobility and Royal families all over the world. The Silver Wraith also found favour amongst captains of industry as well as recognised stars in the entertainment world, making it a very successful return to motor car production for Rolls-Royce. Chassis No BLW77 was completed at the Park Ward works in Willesden in April of 1954, built to the order of Neville Industrial Securities. It was built to Design No 547 and was the only car to be completed in this style, fitted with a power hood, power windows and rear wheel spats. It could be described as Park Wards most stylish creation on the long wheel base Silver Wraith chassis. It was purchased by Frank Dale & Stepsons in the early 1980’s from a Swedish collector and restored at this time; the work included a bare metal re-paint, new interior, new hood and mechanical preparation. It subsequently attended a number of concours events where it was regularly rewarded for its quality, elegance and style. It has remained in our collection ever since, used on a regular basis throughout the year attending motoring events and social functions. It has been maintained in our workshops throughout to ensure reliability, correct performance and pleasurable motoring. It is widely admired wherever it goes and is now offered for sale for the first time on over three decades complete with tools and original handbook.
Condition :  An older restoration still in good condition throughout.
Technical Data :  Four speed automatic gearbox, 6 cylinder in line configuration engine, 4.5 litres displacement, 4566cc capacity. Drum brakes servo-assisted.

Chassis No. GLG69.                   Reg No. CGX 605.                                          £42,500.

Snippets – Wallpaper Heir to an Air Vice Marshall. Ivan Couper Sanderson took delivery of GLG69 at Bottrells in Chalfont St Giles. In 1860 Ivan’s grandfather – Arthur Sanderson (1829/82) set up an agency importing luxurious French wallpapers which was the foundation of the wallpaper & textile firm Arthur Sanderson & Sons Ltd.  The next 20 years saw Arthur open his own factory & several retail outlets, after his death in 1882 Arthur’s sons John, Arthur Jnr & Harold took over the family firm & by the turn of the century the growth of the firm was such that their adverts in 1907 boasted the “Largest Wallpaper Showroom in the World.  Over the years Sandersons acquired various rival firms including Charles Knowles & Co & the William Morris archive of woodblock designs (Arts & Crafts). Sandersons designers included Christopher Dresser (1834/1904) best known for his silverwork & Charles Francis Annesley Voysey (1857/1941) an architect known for the simplicity of his designs.  In May 1918 Ivan Couper Sanderson joined Nr 210 Squadron & before being wounded in September 1918 he claimed 11 victories & was awarded the DFC.  After WWII Ivan joined his father & uncles in the running of the family firm & in 1924 Ivan took control of the Uxbridge factory until his retirement in 1965.  In May 1939 Ivan traded in GLG69 for a Derby-Bentley (B11MX), we are unsure who the intermediate owner was but by 1958 the ownership of GLG69 had been taken over by Group Capt E. M. T. Howell (1913/2008), having joined the RAF in 1933 he served in Egypt (1935/8) with 142 Sqd.  During WWII he was posted to Singapore in 1941, in 1943 after several months of living rough he was captured & held prisoner by the Japanese.  Upon his release in 1945 he returned to the UK where he remained with the RAF until 1967 having achieved the rank of Air Vice Marshall.
