MODEL HISTORY

The Porsche 928 was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1977, it then went on sale the following year as a 1978 model.

At first some hardcore Porsche fans rejected it as the design was so far removed from traditional Porsche values but despite this it went on to win 'car of the year' and was the first sports car to do so. The 928 was the bigger brother to the 924 with a more powerful engine, a 240 bhp 4.5 litre water-cooled V8 which gave excellent performance. The body work was more rounded off with faired in impact bumpers to streamline the shape which gave it a futuristic design. Other state of the art technology included corrosion-resistant aluminium panels, self-adjusting valves and 12,500 mile servicing. The rear wheels were driven via a rear-mounted transmission improving weight distribution.

In 1981 the 928S was produced, with subtle styling modifications and a much needed 25 percent increase in power to 300bhp to compete with other manufacturers at the time. The increase in power came through an enlarged 4.7 litre engine, the compression ratio was also raised and camshafts re-profiled.

The 928 S4 was introduced in 1987 with more power via an additional increase in engine capacity to 5.0 litres. The engine produced 335 bhp with 4 valves per cylinder, modified cylinder heads and larger valves. This really boosted performance with 0-60 dealt with in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 165 mph. Around 80 S4's where built with the very desirable 5 speed dog leg gearbox. The styling also became a little smoother with flush-fitting lights, a rear spoiler which was foldable on the first S4's and an integrated spoiler at the front. To make the cars more user friendly they now came with extras like leather trim, central locking and split folding rear seats. The brakes were especially effective and believed to be better than any other production car of its time. There were many reviews in its day that said this 928 could well be the most efficient handling car produced of the era.

Porsche continued to develop the 928 model and in the spring of 1992 the GTS was introduced. Performance was upgraded yet again, the double over-head cam V8 was increased to 5.4 litres which produced 345 bhp which gave it a 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 168mph. The GTS was given 17" cup designed alloy wheels, Brembo 4-pot calipers which were so good they became known as 'GTS brakes' and many enthusiasts fitted them to their older 928's. Other new features included a tiptronic system for the automatic gearbox and a re-shaped rear spoiler which was colour coded to match the body.

1989-1995 PORSCHE 928 GT/GTS

Overview

GT is a slightly sportier version of the S4 with an extra 10bhp and a short-shifting close-ratio five-speed manual gearbox and sports seats, but standard suspension settings. Rare and sought after. However, the GTS that replaced it in 1992 was the ultimate 928. The engine has a long-stroke crank to take it out to 5.4 litres and 350bhp, while the body is revised with widened rear arches to take larger ‘Cup’ design 17in alloy wheels. A body-colour rear spoiler and teardrop mirrors also help bring the styling up to date. Both manual and automatic versions were offered.

1958-1963 LOTUS Elite

Overview

The undoubted star of the 1957 Earl’s Court Motor Show, but Lotus kept buyers waiting until the summer of 1959 to enjoy this technical marvel of great beauty. Use of a chassis-less glassfibre monocoque and aluminium Coventry-Climax 1200cc 75bhp engine resulted in the incredibly light weight that made this car perform and handle so well; 1960 brought a Series II model with improved rear suspension and trim, plus the SE with its close-ratio ZF gearbox and optional breathing package for an extra 10bhp. Be aware, they are noisy inside, and quite a squeeze for six-footers.

1908 DARRACQ TYPE R 10/12hp - H&H AUCTIONS

"CLASSIC OF THE DAY"
We take a last look at tomorrows H&H Auction at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford
with the following
1908 DARRACQ TYPE R 10/12hp

Estimate: (£) 35,000 - 40,000

Reg Number:
956 YUG
Chassis Number:
17060
Engine Number:
Q13532
Cc:
10/12hp
Body Colour:
Blue
Trim Colour:
Black
MOT ExpiryDate:
Exempt

According to a typewritten account in its history file, chassis 17060 lay idle in a Somerset orchard for twenty-five years before being `discovered' during 1940. Returning to the road the following decade, the Darracq was issued with Certificate of Dating No. 399 by the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain on 15th April 1954. In addition to identifying its year of manufacture as 1908, the Club noted that the Type R was road registered as `LB 6416', wore two-seater coachwork and had the larger twin-cylinder 10/12 engine (bore 112mm x stroke 120mm).

Acquired by Howard L. Gutteridge during 1964 but infrequently licensed over the next ten years, chassis 17060 found a more active custodian in J. Stuart White who used it for the Hull-Scarborough Run, Peter Black Rally and other North East Section events. Migrating to Holland during the late 1980s, the Darracq appears to have been on museum display for a while (or so various accompanying photographs depicting it alongside similar brass era cars and period-attired mannequins would suggest).

Treated to an extensive restoration in 2004, the Type R had much of its woodwork renewed ahead of a repaint from Green to Blue plus a re-trim and attention to its wiring and wheels / tyres etc. Entering the current ownership some three years ago, the two-seater has since been re-registered by the DVLA as `956 YUG'. Stated by the vendor to run well and to have a surprising turn of speed thanks to its willing twin-cylinder engine and three-speed manual transmission, the Darracq remains highly presentable.

Sporting a rear-mounted spare tyre, wicker parasol holder, split windscreen, wood-rim steering wheel and brass lighting set, it looks every inch the Edwardian gadabout. Ideal for the Creepy Crawly and other VCC events, this charming Type R is offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, assorted literature, copy VCC Dating Certificate and numerous restoration photographs.

General History of Darracq

Automobiles Darracq S.A. was a French motor vehicle manufacturing company founded in 1896 by Alexandre Darracq. [1]
Using part of the substantial profit he had made from selling his Gladiator bicycle factory, Alexandre Darracq began operating from a plant in the Parisian suburb of Suresnes. The company started by building electric motor carriages until 1900 when they produced their first vehicle with an internal combustion engine engine to a Léon Bollée design. This was not a success and in early 1901 they launched a single cylinder 6.5 hp light car designed by Paul Ribeyrolles. This was Darracq’s first successful model.
In 1902, Alexandre Darracq signed a contract with Adam Opel to jointly produce vehicles in the German Empire under the brand name "Opel Darracq."
In late 1902, a consortium of London financial interest led by Alfred Rawlinson initiated a takeover of Darracq resulting in the creation in early 1903 of A. Darracq and Co. Ltd. Alexandre Darracq was managing director and the chairman was JS Smith-Winby. [2]
1904 The Darracq automobile company prospered and the 1904 "Famous Fifteen" was a production model of exceptional quality that helped the company capture a ten percent share of the French auto market.
1905 Three years later, the company expanded to Britain, incorporating the A. Darracq Company (1905) Limited with a capitalization of £650,000. The company was registered on 17 November, to take over the motor manufacturing business of a company of almost similar title. [3]
1905 Ribeyrolles designed a 22.4 litre V8 with ohv which took the Land Speed Record on a public road at Arles with a speed of 108.5 mph. This brilliant engine can be considered as the ancestor of all subsequent V8s. The car later proved capable of 120 mph and can be seen in VSCC events. [4]
1906 Produced 8-10 hp. (two-cylinder), 8 hp. (single-cylinder), 10 hp. (two-cylinder), 15 hp. and 20-32 h.p. (both four-cylinder) shaft-drive cars. [5]
1911 Directory lists them as Darracq A. & Co. (1905) Ltd. Orpheus Street, Camberwell, London SE and as motor car manufacturers. [6]
In the summer of 1912, following the failure of a range of new models incorporating a rotary valve under Henriod patents, Alexandre Darracq resigned and retired from the motor industry, having earlier taken the precaution of unloading his shares. The controlling British financial interests recruited Owen Clegg who relocated to the Paris headquarters to take over as the chief engineer of the company, with Walter Hopkins as general manager. During World War I, the Darracq factory was converted to the production of various war materials. [7]
1913 A. Huntley Walker was Managing Director and Norman Craig became Chairman.
1913-1917 For a list of the models and prices see the 1917 Red Book.
During World War I, the Darracq factory was converted to the production of various war materials.
1914 Listed as motor car manufacturers, their speciality being Darracq motors. [8]
1918 Expansion of share capital to fund the acquisition of a substantial interest in Heenan and Froude construction engineers of Worcester and Manchester[9].
1919 Directory lists them as Darracq, A. and Co. (1905) Ltd. Brill Street, Fulham, London SW6 and as motor car manufacturers. [10]
1919 Darracq took over Clement Talbot including the British Talbot and Talbot models. Cars built at at Suresnes were then marketed as Talbot-Darracq[11].
1920 Acquired motor car spring business of Jonas Woodhead and Sons of Leeds[12].
1920 Merged with the Sunbeam Motor Car Co of Wolverhampton. Name of company changed to S. T. D. Motors Ltd[13].
1920 The first annual meeting of the company under its new name S. T. D. Motors Ltd. [14]
1920-1922 Cars built at Suresnes, and early examples of the 8hp built by London Talbot, were badged as Talbot-Darracq.
1923 - 1934 Suresnes built cars, now called Talbot in France, that continued to be imported into GB badged as Darracq. The Darracq works in Acton built bodies for the other STD marques, chiefly Talbot from Ladbroke Grove.
1935 When Rootes took over Sunbeam and Talbot following the bankruptcy of STD Motors, Anthony Lago, backed by British financiers, used an option he held to buy the plant at Suresnes. Cars built there were eventually called Talbot-Lago, but up to 1939 they continued to be badged as Darracq if imported into GB to avoid infringing Rootes Group's right to the Talbot name in GB.[1

1913 HUMBERETTE 8HP - ROBIN LAWTON

Each day we search dealer & auction websites for interesting or rare vehicles in the classic marketplace, sometimes something crops up that we think will be of interest to our readers.
Today's  "Classic of the Day" comes from

1913 HUMBERETTE 8hp
Although the Humberette name had first been used on a single cylinder voiturette as early as 1903, it was the later V-twin engined cyclecar that appeared in 1912 that was to catch the attention of the public and prove its
merit in a number of long distance trials. The new generation of cyclecars were becoming very popular and the Humberette was to stand out for being sturdy and well engineered, ensuring reliability.
The power unit was an air cooled V twin of 1 litre capacity which drove through a three speed transmission. Priced at £125, the specification included lights and windscreen - items frequently seen as extras in those
times.
Said to be the best and most original survivor, this example has a VCC
Dating Certificate stating it is of 1913 manufacture, although it was not in
fact registered until the following year.
Having spent many years in a museum, it was to become part of the Sharp
collection until acquired the the current owner nine years ago and carefully
re-commissioned.
Running well, it is supplied with extensive paperwork, including correspondence from the Humber Register, copies of sales brochure, operating manual and numerous technical notes. A buff RF60 logbook is also included.

We are located south of the Hindhead Tunnel (A3) between Petersfield and Alton. Viewing by prior appointment please.
Delivery can be arranged at very competitive rates.

£23,950

Please don't hesitate to contact me to discuss your requirements, I look forward to being of assistance.

1958 MG MAGNETTE ZB VARITONE - PERCIVALMOTOR COMPANY

Our Classic of the Day comes from the stock of Percival Motor Company based in Maidstone. From an eclectic mix of classics we have selected this corner stone of bygone British motoring.

1958 MG MAGNETTE ZB VARITONE

MGMagnette176BURshowroom2014

We sold this Magnette to a very good customer of ours late last year - it is due back here shortly due to his change of plans. light grey over dark grey with a lovely dark red interior.
A good restoration was carried out some years go. The bodywork shows no signs of rust and the paintwork is clean and free of blemishes. The interior is absolutely lovely with excellent leather seats, a replacement carpet and refurbished woodwork. The engine bay is clean and well detailed and the bumpers have been rechromed.
The first owner kept the car right up to 2002 - it has had three owners since. There is a detailed history log going back some years showing regular care and maintenance.
The engine and gearbox were overhauled 15,000 miles ago. The car comes with an original workshop manual. It drives very well and has completed a tour of Holland last year. A rare find nowadays, this Magnette looks very handsome and is ready for regular use

1952 CITROEN 2CV A-TYPE

Our Classic of the the day is this
1952 Citroen 2CV A Type

This is believed to be the oldest 2CV in the UK, indeed it was chosen to feature on the 2CV strand following restoration at the 2013 Classic Car Show.

The car was found in remarkably sound condition by a well known 2CV expert and collector as illustrated by photographs on file. A painstaking restoration was then undertaken the emphasis being on retaining as much originality as possible whilst and ensuring that every detail of the car is authentic and correct. Invoices on file illustrated with photographs details the comprehensive and meticulous standard of the work completed, indeed over £20,000 was spent.

The result is a fantastic early 2CV that retains a lovely detail patina and character, which is fundamentally fully sorted. The car really is delightful, the detail features such as the speedometer, rear view mirror and seats are truly lovely and unlike anything we have seen at Hairpin before!

To find out about this & other top quality classics vist the company website at: http://www.thehairpincompany.com/car-Citroen-2CV_A_Type-1952.html
