1979 ASTON MARTIN AM V8 OSCAR INDIA


We offer for sale this Oscar India (OI) 540 series - chassis number: V8SOR12098 one of 44 made in this series.
As with all traditional Aston Martins this is a truly a hand built vehicle with the sum of 1200 man hours required from start to finish. OI's were built from 1978 to 1986 and are commonly known as series 4 V8's. When the Oscar India's we introduced we saw a more refined and luxurious car being produced, with a closed bonnet scoop, twin cibie driving lamps, fog lamps under the front bumper, integral front spoiler, burr walnut dash and door cappings and the roof lining changed from cloth to leather. In the period from October 1978 and March 1980 when the 540 series of cars we produced only 44 cars were made.
This car is presented as probably the best Oscar available at present, a stunning example ready to be enjoyed. This appreciating classic offers excellent value for money with this model now considered to be the next collectable Aston.

This car was first registered in March 1979 and comes in Metallic Windsor Red and carries a good history file. We have receipts and evidence of work carried out in excess of £50k, with some extensive work carried out on the brakes, gearbox and engine.

MODEL HISTORY

The Porsche 928 was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1977, it then went on sale the following year as a 1978 model.

At first some hardcore Porsche fans rejected it as the design was so far removed from traditional Porsche values but despite this it went on to win 'car of the year' and was the first sports car to do so. The 928 was the bigger brother to the 924 with a more powerful engine, a 240 bhp 4.5 litre water-cooled V8 which gave excellent performance. The body work was more rounded off with faired in impact bumpers to streamline the shape which gave it a futuristic design. Other state of the art technology included corrosion-resistant aluminium panels, self-adjusting valves and 12,500 mile servicing. The rear wheels were driven via a rear-mounted transmission improving weight distribution.

In 1981 the 928S was produced, with subtle styling modifications and a much needed 25 percent increase in power to 300bhp to compete with other manufacturers at the time. The increase in power came through an enlarged 4.7 litre engine, the compression ratio was also raised and camshafts re-profiled.

The 928 S4 was introduced in 1987 with more power via an additional increase in engine capacity to 5.0 litres. The engine produced 335 bhp with 4 valves per cylinder, modified cylinder heads and larger valves. This really boosted performance with 0-60 dealt with in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 165 mph. Around 80 S4's where built with the very desirable 5 speed dog leg gearbox. The styling also became a little smoother with flush-fitting lights, a rear spoiler which was foldable on the first S4's and an integrated spoiler at the front. To make the cars more user friendly they now came with extras like leather trim, central locking and split folding rear seats. The brakes were especially effective and believed to be better than any other production car of its time. There were many reviews in its day that said this 928 could well be the most efficient handling car produced of the era.

Porsche continued to develop the 928 model and in the spring of 1992 the GTS was introduced. Performance was upgraded yet again, the double over-head cam V8 was increased to 5.4 litres which produced 345 bhp which gave it a 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 168mph. The GTS was given 17" cup designed alloy wheels, Brembo 4-pot calipers which were so good they became known as 'GTS brakes' and many enthusiasts fitted them to their older 928's. Other new features included a tiptronic system for the automatic gearbox and a re-shaped rear spoiler which was colour coded to match the body.

1989-1995 PORSCHE 928 GT/GTS


Overview

GT is a slightly sportier version of the S4 with an extra 10bhp and a short-shifting close-ratio five-speed manual gearbox and sports seats, but standard suspension settings. Rare and sought after. However, the GTS that replaced it in 1992 was the ultimate 928. The engine has a long-stroke crank to take it out to 5.4 litres and 350bhp, while the body is revised with widened rear arches to take larger ‘Cup’ design 17in alloy wheels. A body-colour rear spoiler and teardrop mirrors also help bring the styling up to date. Both manual and automatic versions were offered.

1938 LAGONDA V12 SHORT CHASSIS RAPIDE

Without doubt one of the most refined and graceful pre-war cars made, the V12 Rapide was the last true masterpiece for both Lagonda and WO Bentley. In 1935, Lagonda's new chairman Alan Good declared his ambition to produce the world's most desirable cars with the introduction of the V12 engine, giving his engineering and design team just 2 years to achieve production. With WO Bentley on board as technical director, he assembled a highly talented team from his days at Bentley and Rolls-Royce to accomplish this. Bentley achieved Good's aims with his 4480 cc V12 producing 180 bhp at 5500 rpm and with enough torque to take any of the V12 models from 7 mph to well over 100 mph in top gear. Reports of the de Ville press demonstrator achieving 109 mph caused a MP to call for a ban on the sale of cars capable of achieving the magic ton.

Aside from the engine, the V12 was the first car completely designed under the direction of WO since he left Bentley with a new chassis incorporating independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes amongst numerous other innovative design features, all resulting in a car remarked upon for having fantastic ride and handling characteristics. WO always made his racing intentions clear from the beginning of his technical directorship so it was not surprising when a Lagonda V12 scored a podium finish at the 1939 Le Mans 24 hours.

Introduced in 1938, the V12 Rapide was the jewel in Lagonda's crown. Built on a 10' 4" short chassis with Lagonda's master designer Frank Feeley (of DB3S fame) penning the voluptuous lines of the bodywork, the result was a true world beater; even today few cars can emulate the combination of beauty, luxury and performance of a V12 Rapide. Marketed at a price of £1600 (nearly 3 times the average house price in Britain), 14 V12 Rapides were produced and all of these are known to exist today and nearly all of them are in very secure ownership.

Chassis 14071 was completed on 9th November 1938 and guaranteed on 18th February 1939. It was ordered through the Grosvenor Garage by Mr E. Boydell of Hale, Cheshire, who kept the Rapide until 1950. Clearly a man of superb taste, Boydell ordered his V12 in the sumptuous specification of black exterior with a grey hood, disc alloy wheels and a red leather interior finished with a black ebonised wood dash and polished pewter inlays. Various rare features were ordered for the car including a Phillips radio and a non-folding screen for a much cleaner look.

According to Lagonda service records, 14071 had completed 27425 miles by the end of 1950. After that date, the car was known to the Lagonda Club and had a string of British owners including Lagonda collector Herb Schofield during the 1970s. In 1998 it was exported to the USA by Albert Vorthius of Maryland who kept it for 15 years before entering the Craig Davies collection of Pebble Beach.

Today 14071 is presented in fine cosmetic and mechanical condition. Currently in two tone red with tan interior, 14071 is ready to be enjoyed on the road or as a highly rewarding restoration project back to its stunning original specification. 14071 is nicely original apart from an engine transplant to a Sanction 2 engine (V12/204) that the Lagonda service department completed in November 1946 (a very common procedure as the Sanction 1 engines suffered reliability issues). All major mechanical parts are correct with the matching number timing case and original twin SU carb setup (WO's favourite) still on the car.

1952 CITROEN 2CV A-TYPE

Our Classic of the the day is this
1952 Citroen 2CV A Type

 
This is believed to be the oldest 2CV in the UK, indeed it was chosen to feature on the 2CV strand following restoration at the 2013 Classic Car Show.

The car was found in remarkably sound condition by a well known 2CV expert and collector as illustrated by photographs on file. A painstaking restoration was then undertaken the emphasis being on retaining as much originality as possible whilst and ensuring that every detail of the car is authentic and correct. Invoices on file illustrated with photographs details the comprehensive and meticulous standard of the work completed, indeed over £20,000 was spent.

The result is a fantastic early 2CV that retains a lovely detail patina and character, which is fundamentally fully sorted. The car really is delightful, the detail features such as the speedometer, rear view mirror and seats are truly lovely and unlike anything we have seen at Hairpin before!
