1968 FORD GT40 MkV by SAFIR

It is with great pleasure that we can bring to the market this stunning GT40 Mark V Powered by Ford, built by Safir Engineering.

Not to be confused with a replica, this car (the Mark V) is an official continuation car built in the UK by Safir the work overseen by JW engineering following an agreement with Ford in Deerborn. Starting at the last used GT40 serial number and moving forward sequentially, these cars carry JW Engineering chassis plates identical to those on all GT40s produced by the company. This continuation run was originally set for 25 units but subsequently changed to a very apt 40 units!

This link gives a wonderful first-hand account of the process behind this models foundation - http://gt40.com/letter-peter-thorp.php

The Mark V, as with all other GT40 production, has excellent accuracy and maintenance of records with each car detailed in a published “production sheet”. Records are kept by the originator of the project (Mr. Peter Thorp) and the directors of Safir GT40 Spares. It is widely acknowledged by enthusiasts through to Ford Motor Company themselves that the Mark 5 holds a significant and positive place in the history of the GT40.

Our car is chassis number GT40P-1123 which was delivered in March 1989 but registered as a historic vehicle from 1968. It is believed to be one of just five examples that remain in the UK with the majority of production now in the US.

Finished in Red with White stripes, the first owner of this stunning vehicle is a noted businessman and car collector who only kept the car until the end of 1994 – covering just over 2,000 miles during his tenure.

The subsequent owner of the vehicle, purchasing in 1994, has owned the car ever since. His love for it is clear to see from not only the immaculate original condition we find the vehicle to be in today but also from the wonderful history file that accompanies it. This file begins with his purchase (assisted by Peter Thorp of Safir), details his commissioning of a new set of doors with removable tops (which are still present) and goes on to evidence the yearly maintenance lavished upon it during its 7,825 miles. Just the history file alone is a great read!

GT40P-1123 was built around a steel monocoque with the red coupe body shell being fabricated from Kevlar Carbon Fibre – the weave of which can be faintly seen through the paint! The Ford V8 is a 5.3 small block, built and tested by the highly respected Mathwall Engineering with Holley carburettors and said to develop around 400hp - the history file (of course) includes the original test data!

Running through a ZF 5 speed transmission, an AP Racing twin disc hydraulic clutch and a limited slip differential, this power is kept in check by AP Racing disc brakes front and rear. These are shrouded in lovely period style 15” six spoke BRM Magnesium wheels.

This really is a fantastic example of a very important piece of the Ford GT40 story – a vehicle with a more detailed and better-documented history would surely be impossible to find. Any inquiry or inspection is strongly encouraged as this car will surely not disappoint.

1968 MAZDA COSMO 110S
Although founded in the 1920s, the company that would become Mazda Motor Corporation did not commence series production of passenger cars until 1960. Only four years later the Japanese firm exhibited its first rotary-engined prototype, having acquired the rights to produce NSU’s Wankel-designed engines. In 1966 Mazda launched its first rotary, the Cosmo L10A, which went into production the following year. Mazda’s flagship model, the Cosmo, was powered by a twin-rotor engine displacing 982cc and producing 110bhp which was enough to endow the pretty two-seater coupé with a top speed of 110mph.
While the Cosmo was a comfortable grand touring car in road-going trim, Mazda was keen to demonstrate its competition capabilities, and at the same time allay any fears about the reliability of their Wankel rotary engine. To this end, the factory entered two cars in the 1968 Marathon de la Route, an 84-hour test of endurance held at Germany’s famed Nürburgring circuit. The Cosmos ran near the front of the field during the entire race, with one retiring in the 82nd hour and the other going on to finish 4th overall behind two works-entered Porsche 911s and a works Lancia Fulvia 1.3 HF.
Production was limited, and when the Cosmo was phased out in 1972 only 1,519 had been made, of which 1,176 were the Series II L10B version. In the world of collectible Japanese cars, the Mazda Cosmo ranks in the top tier, alongside its high-performance Toyota and Nissan competitors, the 2000GT and the Skyline GT-R

EQUIPMENT
Series 1.5, RHD, Hub caps, Trim rings, Wing mirrors, Power antenna, Sony cassette stereo under dash, Rear parcel shelf speakers.

EXTERIOR

This fabulous little sports coupe appears as if on the move standing still, with a dynamic pair of swage lines and grille slats framed perfectly by distinctive chrome fixings front and rear. Having been treated to a full respray in January of this year the car presents in charming custom orange – a suitably period colour that comprehensively accentuates the cars flowing lines.
Bright work has survived very well indeed, framing the windows and screens nicely whilst mirrors and door handles show in excellent order. More recently the front headlight lenses have been replaced and and bumpers re-chromed.

INTERIOR

At only 45.9 inches high the Cosmo requires care upon installation where you are met by a no-nonsense dash; a cockpit affair with toggles for wiper speed and the electric radio antenna. To the left of the speedo and tach are an amp gauge, fuel gauge, clock and an innovative map light; a rotating eye that illuminates things nicely. The vinyl dashboard remains tight and clean whilst gearbox tunnel and door cards retain good texture and show tidily with a rich patina. An under dash radio / cassette leaves entertainment to the passenger whilst the Pioneer radio speakers on the parcel shelf are thought to be original. A refurbished Nardi wheel and original wooden gear knob offer something softer and more elegant in an otherwise plain cabin.
The contrasting houndstooth and vinyl seats appear to have survived well and maintain good support and integrity.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The Series I/L10A Cosmo was powered by a 0810 two-rotor engine with 982 cc and produced about 110 hp (thus the 110 name). It used a Hitachi 4-barrel carburetor and an odd ignition design – two spark plugs per chamber with dual distributors. The aural drama of a wankel rotary is extraordinary; a unique blend of high pitched scream and jet-engined thrust that accompanies the keen performance.
Having been subject to a recent oil change the car runs smoothly and is enjoyable out on the open road.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The clean design of the 14 inch steel wheels is illuminated by an alluring chrome lip and hub cap arrangement – unmarked and free of pitting or corrosion wrapped in period GT special rubber.
The brakes have had some recent attention and pull the car up smoothly with no adverse pitch or pull.

HISTORY FILE

Having been built in 1968, this Cosmo was caught in the mid-model update making it a very rare “Series Middle” comprised of a Series I short wheelbase chassis and running gear but adorned with the updated cosmetic features such as the larger air dam of the Series II.
As the world’s first production Wankel rotary-powered car, and one of only 343 Series 1 examples, the Cosmo stands as quite a unique prospect.
The car is supplied having recently been imported with all taxes paid and UK registered.

Engine Size: 2175cc

  • A tour de force in its aerodynamic design and innovative technology
  • Orginal UK delivered RHD
  • Factory fitted PAS
  • Semi-AutomatiC
  • Extremely rare
  • Former long-term ownership
  • Superb, chic and stylish
  • Restored
  • Perfect for the Goodwood Revival

After 18 years of secret development as the successor to the Traction Avant, the DS 19 was introduced on 5th October 1955 at the Paris Motor Show. In the first 15 minutes of the show, 743 orders were taken and orders for the first day totalled over 12,000. During the 10 days of the show, the DS took in 80,000 deposits; a record that stood for the next 60 years.
In addition, the vehicle was offered with the option of power steering and a semi-automatic transmission (the transmission required no clutch pedal, but gears still had to be shifted by hand), though the shift lever controlled a powered hydraulic shift mechanism in place of a mechanical linkage, and a fibreglass roof which lowered the centre of gravity and so reduced weight transfer. Inboard front brakes (as well as independent suspension) reduced unsprung weight. Different front and rear track widths and tyre sizes reduced the unequal tyre loading, which is well known to promote understeer, typical of front-engined and front-wheel drive cars.
Finished in the period colour combination of Bleu Angora with Gris Palombe and Bufflon Gris vinyl. Extremely rare factory original RHD car, this particular example benefiting with just having only 4 owners over the 50 years which highlights the importance each of these lucky owners have placed on the Safari.

Complete with tools and period fitted Supersonic radio still fitted this car will simply not disappoint upon viewing.
Perfect for the Goodwood Revival.
Now available for viewing at the DD Classics Dealership in London, please call 0208 878 33 55 to book an appointment.
