This charming long chassis 25/30 is finished in Cream over Brown and trimmed in Brown leather. Its Windovers Saloon body includes a Division and 'MJK 377' is thought to be one of just six Rolls-Royce 25/30s clothed to this design. 1930 HUMBER 16/50 SALOON

The Humber firm was created in 1887, first making bicycles, then motorcycles and cars, then in 1925 with the acquisition of Commer in 1925, commercial vehicles. Although Humber had a reputation for quality products, the firm became unprofitable in the mid 20's until the Rootes brothers bought into the business in 1928. It was also forced to radically redesign its cars and the 16/50, launched at the 1928 motor show was the result. These imposing and beautifully proportioned cars are, as you would expect quite rare.

This car is a 1929 model, 1930 registered 16/50 MK2 saloon in its original colour scheme of black over maroon with right-hand gear-change. It still carries its original registration number and the recorded mileage of 44,000 is believed correct. Over the last few years, this car has been subjected to a complete restoration - too much to list here but there are photos showing it as a bare chassis and the engine, gearbox, brakes, suspension, axles have all been re-built, the wiring loom had been replaced, the radiator re-cored, new batteries and four new Michelin tyres. The body has also been completely renovated with new steel let in where needed then it was etch primed and painted in period paint before a new leather roof covering was fitted. Despite all of this work, the restoration has been sympathetic and the car looks outstanding. The interior trim is original and will need completely replacing if it is to be brought up to the standard of the rest of the car.

Please call if more detail is required.

1934 ASTON MARTIN MkII SPECIAL SPORTS SALOON
£195,000
Introduced in 1934, the Mark II was Aston-Martin’s replacement for the Le Mans model. It sported a new stronger chassis and an improved engine with the counter-balanced crankshaft. Originally available in either short or long wheelbase versions, the shorter version is mechanically virtually identical to the famous Ulster racing car, one of which came 3rd overall at the Le Mans 24 hour race in 1935. A number of MK II cars competed in the period and the competition lineage can be clearly seen in the MK II making it an extremely capable and fast car, suitable for the rally, touring and even racing events. The long chassis version only differs from the short by the length of a foot well for the rear seats thus turning them into very usable cars for 4 people.
Chassis number L4/524/L has a well-known history stretching back to 1936, only two years after it was sold as a new car when it was entered in the RAC Rally by its first owner F A Rhodes, receiving a 2nd Class Award. A copy of the factory record card lists one F Angell of Holcombe Garage, Leeds as the next owner (from 1947) while a notebook records Dr A S W Egerton of Wallasey, Cheshire as the owner from 1955.
Some years later, in the 1970s, this car was one of a pair of Aston-Martins owned by Dr Dudley Heath with sequential chassis numbers, the other Aston Martin was Ulster 'L4/525/U'. Both cars are featured in Michael Bowler's book 'Aston Martin – The Legend'. Dr Heath displayed 'CML 242' at various Concours events, albeit with a redesigned boot enclosing the rear wheel. In 1983 the car featured in Automobile Quarterly (Vol. XXI No.4) and on the poster 'Aston Martin – The Pre-war Years'. A copy of this poster is in the Ecurie Bertelli Archive.
After Victor Gauntlett took over Aston Martin, he acquired 'CML 242' as he had hopes of assembling a collection of every model that the company had made. Soon realizing that this was a hopeless ambition, he donated the car to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Wishing Well Appeal charity auction of 1988 where it failed to sell. Soon after, the Aston was acquired by the current vendor, at which time it had a recorded mileage of around 81,000, believed genuine.
The car was in poor condition; the sunroof had been filled in with plaster, all the windows had had lugs brazed onto them and were screwed into the bodywork, and the stanchions inside the bonnet had been cut down with a hacksaw so that a gravity-feed fuel tank could be installed. The spare wheel had been repositioned inside the car, which gave it a much smoother boot profile but weakened the body, as the main timber had to be cut away to make room. As a result, the door pillars were bulging outwards. There was also a fair amount of rot in the frame.
In 1989, a rebuild of the body and chassis was commenced by Messrs J&B Young. An original body (taken from a saloon that had been cut down to make an Ulster replica) was found; this had all the correct window fittings and a sunroof. Its frame was skinned in aluminium to complete a replacement saloon body, with the spare wheel in its original position and all six windows opening. The rebuild was completed in 1993.
The engine was also in poor condition, registering just 10psi oil pressure at cruising speed, but the car completed several Club tours to Europe in this state, and in 1997 covered 2,000 miles from Vancouver via the Rockies to Monterey, where the owner entered it for the Pebble Beach Concours. It won its class. The engine was then rebuilt. 'CML 242' is still used occasionally, and in April this year successfully completed a three-day tour of Devon.
Available to view and test at the Ecurie Bertelli purpose-built showroom and restoration facility. Please contact Andy Bell or Robert Blakemore for more details.

1933 BENTLEY 3 1/2 LITRE
Park Ward Sports Saloon

Chassis B15AE
Registration ALU 323

This Bentley is truly historic in the annals of the marque as this is the very first registered Derby Bentley
Owned by the factory and used as one of the 2 Trials Cars (an in-house term for a Press Vehicle)
The other vehicle (B1AE) which carried an open Vanden Plas body and was registered ALU 321 appearing in period shots alongside B15AE (ALU 323) most notably at the Aldenham Club House
B15AE was the first Derby Bentley to have been registered and used on the road as a test vehicle & delivered having been granted its' Guarantee several weeks earlier than any other Derby
She was also used to launch the model to the public and VIPs in August 1933 at the Royal Hotel, Ascot including test drives by:-

the great W O Bentley himself / Sir Malcolm Campbell - prolific Land Speed Record Holder (who wrote a report on his experiences in the Field magazine) / Wolf Barnato (Bentley Boy & member Board Member for the new company) & the Earl of March (later the Duke of Richmond & Gordon) amongst many other notable clients & journalists

She was used for customer trials as well and is featured in period brochures and later in many reference books on the marque - including the definitive works Bentley, the Silent Sports Car, 1931 - 41

written by Michael Ellman-Brown

She is also listed in Jonnie Greens fabulous Bentley, 50 years of the Marque and "Bentley Past & Present" by Rivers Fletcher

After over 85 years, remarkably, she still wears her original Park Ward bodywork number C.602

Should be noted that this is the very first of Park Ward's production bodies too

The engine is the correct unit originally installed into this chassis bearing number Z8BA

Having been so well treated in the intervening 85 years she was extensively rebuilt in the 1990s / early 2000s with new ash framework whilst using as many original parts as possible - she remains remarkably original in appearance and importantly retains all of the important bits (chassis B15AE / engine Z8BA / body C.602)

At the same the engine was also thoroughly rebuilt with a reground crankshaft, big & small end bearings, new valves & guides, water pump etc etc

She drives beautifully & is regularly exercised, notwithstanding her importance within the annals of Bentley history

A real joy to behold and also representing a really important part of Bentley company history, as already mentioned
