1972 MERCEDES BENZ 280SE
3.5 Litre

The W108 was one of Mercedes most elegant post-War designs. Paul Bracq’s new large saloon was the model of modern yet understated timeless style.
The introduction of a new V8 engine in 1970 brought with it the sort of performance that befitted what became the long line of Mercedes Sonderklasse saloons.

This W108 280SE 3.5 was supplied in the UK new by Mercedes concessionaires, Carols Motors Ltd on October 10th 1972. Finished in the striking and wonderfully period hue of Icon Gold and contrasted beautifully by the dark green hide interior. It’s a colour scheme that really makes the car.

Specified with floor-shift automatic gearbox, power steering, front and rear electric windows, factory electric sunroof, heated rear screen, Becker Mexico radio/cassette and central locking.
This W108 has been maintained solely by John Haynes Auto Technics since 1999 when it was purchased by its previous owner who kept the car 17 years. Indeed, it was supplied to its current keeper by John Haynes in 2016 who has continued to have the cared for by Haynes.

As the bills show, this W108 has been maintained without regard to expense by a leading marque expert for the past 18 years and has covered just 81k miles from new.

The car is a former Mercedes-Benz Club Concours winner, winning three events. And it is a truly exceptional and highly original example. Without question one of the finest, there is.
The paint and chrome work are unmarked with perfect panel gaps. The interior is superb and retains its original leather upholstery and woodwork, both of which are in beautiful condition. It has its correct Becker Mexico stereo.
The wheels wear unmarked trims and are shod with recent, correct Michelin MXV tyres.
The 3.5-litre fuel injected V8 engine starts instantly and on the road the car drives with a tightness and fluidity that only the best examples possess.

With the car comes all the original books/manuals, together with an excellent service history and detailed account of all recent maintenance work carried out.
With the Coupé and Cabriolet 280SE 3.5 models now commanding hundreds of thousands of pounds, the equally elegant saloon models are, to our minds, currently very much undervalued. There is, however, nothing as expensive as a cheap eight-cylinder W108 when the costs of restoration are considered.
This 3.5-litre saloon is undoubtedly one of the best there is with superb provenance, fabulous colours and impeccable maintenance. A very special car.

1955 BENTLEY R-TYPE

£29,000.00
  • 3 owners from new, current ownership for the past 24 years
  • Original specification of Black over Cream with Tobacco Brown leather
  • Accompanied by lovely history file, tools and original handbook
  • Fresh from £10,000 GBP recommissioning

Launched in June 1952 the R-Type was the 2nd Post-War model produced by Bentley and replaced the very similar Mk VI. In fact, chassis records are known to note early R-Type’s as Mk VII’s as the R-Type name only stuck due to the RT prefix of the chassis numbers.
As was the case with most Bentleys and Rolls-Royces, the choice of a standard body was available alongside the more bespoke coach built examples, sent away to a coachbuilder of your choice and fitted with various styles of body.
Powered by a 4,566cc straight six engine with an iron block, aluminium head and twin SU HD6 carburettors the R-Type put out a very respectable 130hp. When tested by ‘The Motor’ in 1953, an automatic version recorded a top speed of 101.7mph, 0-60mph in 13 seconds and 15.5 miles per gallon which for a car of its size and weight is no mean feat.
Although production only lasted 3 years, the popularity of the R-Type led to 2,323 being made before it was succeeded by the S-Series of cars, starting with the S1 which was introduced in the same year.

The example offered here is chassis number B164ZY was first registered in February 1955 in Black over Cream with Tobacco Brown leather trim. The early ownership history is not known but in 1989 John Puddy, a well respected Bentley and Rolls-Rypce specialist bought the car from the 2nd owner who had owned the car for many years. John says that the originality and the fact that little details like the tools, original handbook and original valve radio were all intact, was what drew him to the car in the first place. He carried a sympathetic restoration of the coachwork and paint soon after buying the car before selling the car to a Mr. Eric Church in 1992.
Mr Church kept the car until his death at which point it passed into the ownership of his dear wife, Wilhelmina. Before his death, Mr Church had been in touch with a local wedding car hire company and had agreed to let the company act as an agent to rent the car out for weddings. Mrs Church kept the car with said wedding hire company and they were custodians of the car until it came to us for sale. When the decision was made to sell the car it was felt that the bodywork would need attention and a thorough service should be carried out. We oversaw the work which has been done to a very high standard and the car now presents beautifully in its original colours and still retaining the original interior and all those lovely original features that are lost in so many cars over the years. It drives beautifully and is a wonderful example of what we feel is a hugely undervalued motor car.

These lovely Bentleys really do give you the driving experience and sense of occasion that all Bentleys are known for but for a fraction of the cost of most other models. Having had a small fortune spent on it, this particular R-Type is ready for owner no. 5 and is sure to be an absolute joy to own.

1949 BRISTOL 402
"The Hollywood Special" film stars Jean Simmons & Stewart Granger Roadster

n 1949 Jean Simmons and Stewart Granger were two of the worlds biggest film stars. So close were the British couple (who married a year later in America in a ceremony organised by Howard Hughes) that they happily decided to buy identical cars. They chose a pair of Bristol 402 Convertibles, bought from surrey car dealer (and later owner of Bristol) Tony Crook, with Number plates NPF1 and NPF2. Only 24 convertible 402's were built, and fewer than half remain today. The splendid example we have for sale is Jean Simmons personal car, affectionately known as the "Hollywood Special" which she drove in England until she left for an even higher-profile in Hollywood.

The car division of the Bristol Aircraft Company had been founded in 1945 to make high performance cars to Aircraft standards, and it launched the BMW-based 400 series at Geneva in 1947, with streamlined bodywork still reminiscent of the pre war BMW 328. The 401 had much more aerodynamic bodywork shaped in Bristol's very own wind tunnel, developed by a theme suggested by Touring of Milan. BMW 328's had many pre war racing successes , including winning the 1940 Mille Miglia. In 1949 a Bristol 401 competed in the same race coming 3rd in Class, this success transpired in sales of some 600 401 saloons, built with Aluminium Body over Steel a frame, just as in the production of Aircraft. The much rarer convertible version was called the Bristol 402 and in Standard form the 401/2 engine delivered around 85bhp.

After Jean Simmons left Surrey to star in Such films as Guys and Dolls (with Frank Sinatra), Spartacus (with Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier) and Elmer Gantry (with Burt Lancaster), She sold the car back to Tony Crook's Caterham dealership. Tony Crook decided that the original 85bhp engine did not offer enough performance for this rakishly good looking convertible and so to further enhance it's appeal he fitted a racing Frazer Nash version of the 2-litre engine which it retains to this day

1963 MASERATI 3500 GTI SUPERLEGGERA

BY TOURING

Despite numerous racetrack successes that included Juan Manuel Fangio’s fifth World Championship – at the wheel of a 250F – and a runner-up spot in the World Sportscar Championship with the fabulous 450S, both in 1957, the marque’s most successful season, Maserati was by that time facing a bleak future.

Its parent company’s financial difficulties eventually forced a withdrawal from racing and Maserati’s survival strategy for the 1960s centred on establishing the company as a producer of road cars. The Modena marque’s new era began in 1957 with the launch of the Touring-bodied 3500GT, its first road model built in significant numbers.
A luxury ‘2+2’, the 3500GT drew on Maserati’s competition experience, employing a tubular chassis frame and an engine derived from the 350S sports car unit of 1956.
Its designer was none other than Giulio Alfieri, creator of the immortal Tipo 60/61 ‘Birdcage’ sports-racer and the man responsible for developing the 250F into a World Championship winner. The twin-overhead-camshaft, six-cylinder engine was a close relative of that used in the 250F and developed around 220bhp initially on carburettors, later examples producing 235bhp on Lucas mechanical fuel injection. Built initially with drum brakes and four-speed transmission, the 3500GT was progressively updated, gaining five speeds, front disc brakes and, finally, all-disc braking before production ceased in 1964.

The wonderful 3500 GTi on offer today was the subject of an in-depth restoration from 2005 onwards. Finished in arguably the best colour combination for a 3500 – gunmetal grey over red this wonderful example of the marque is also reported to be in excellent mechanical order.
3500GTs continue to gain popularity among collectors and are an excellent value compared to their Ferrari equivalents. Their handsome styling and luxurious appointments make them standout cars of their era.
It is increasingly difficult to find good examples like this one. The presentation of this 3500GT makes it stand out from its peers and it is no doubt going to attract attention and admiration where ever it goes
