1972 MERCEDES BENZ 280SE
3.5 Litre
The W108 was one of Mercedes most elegant post-War designs. Paul Bracq’s new large saloon was the model of modern yet understated timeless style.
The introduction of a new V8 engine in 1970 brought with it the sort of performance that befitted what became the long line of Mercedes Sonderklasse saloons.
This W108 280SE 3.5 was supplied in the UK new by Mercedes concessionaires, Carols Motors Ltd on October 10th 1972. Finished in the striking and wonderfully period hue of Icon Gold and contrasted beautifully by the dark green hide interior. It’s a colour scheme that really makes the car.
Specified with floor-shift automatic gearbox, power steering, front and rear electric windows, factory electric sunroof, heated rear screen, Becker Mexico radio/cassette and central locking.
This W108 has been maintained solely by John Haynes Auto Technics since 1999 when it was purchased by its previous owner who kept the car 17 years. Indeed, it was supplied to its current keeper by John Haynes in 2016 who has continued to have the cared for by Haynes.
As the bills show, this W108 has been maintained without regard to expense by a leading marque expert for the past 18 years and has covered just 81k miles from new.
The car is a former Mercedes-Benz Club Concours winner, winning three events. And it is a truly exceptional and highly original example. Without question one of the finest, there is.
The paint and chrome work are unmarked with perfect panel gaps. The interior is superb and retains its original leather upholstery and woodwork, both of which are in beautiful condition. It has its correct Becker Mexico stereo.
The wheels wear unmarked trims and are shod with recent, correct Michelin MXV tyres.
The 3.5-litre fuel injected V8 engine starts instantly and on the road the car drives with a tightness and fluidity that only the best examples possess.
With the car comes all the original books/manuals, together with an excellent service history and detailed account of all recent maintenance work carried out.
With the Coupé and Cabriolet 280SE 3.5 models now commanding hundreds of thousands of pounds, the equally elegant saloon models are, to our minds, currently very much undervalued. There is, however, nothing as expensive as a cheap eight-cylinder W108 when the costs of restoration are considered.
This 3.5-litre saloon is undoubtedly one of the best there is with superb provenance, fabulous colours and impeccable maintenance. A very special car.
