1973 ALFA ROMEO GTV 2000 VELOCE - LAP 63

"CLASSIC OF THE DAY"
Featuring

1973 ALFA ROMEO GTV 2000  VELOCE

The 2000 GTV (V - for 'veloce', or 'quick' in Italian) was introduced in 1971 together with the 2000 Berlina sedan and 2000 Spider. The 2000 range was the replacement for the 1750 range. Once again the engine was rationalised throughout the range. The engine displacement was increased to 1962 cc with a change of the bore and stroke to 84 mm × 88.5 mm. Oil and radiator capacities remained unchanged. The engine produced 132 PS (97 kW; 130 hp) at 5500 rpm with the SPICA fuel injection, which, once again, was only fitted to cars destined for the United States and Canadian markets, with carburettors retained for other markets producing officially the same power. 37,459 GTVs were made before production ended.

Externally the 2000 GTV is most easily distinguished by the following features:
  • Grille with horizontal chrome bars, featuring protruding blocks forming the familiar Alfa heart in outline.
  • Smaller hubcaps with exposed wheel nuts.
  • Optional aluminium "Millerighe" alloys first seen on the Montreal.
  • The larger rear light clusters first fitted to United States market 1750 GTV's were standard for all markets on the 2000 GTV. USA market rear turn signals were red instead of yellow on non-USA models. The side marker lamps were larger and did not have a turn signal flash feature.

The car offered here (ch#AR*2439344) is a 105.21 model, first registered in Italy in 1973. It still carries its original and very particular Italian number plates: AQ90000 and has its original Italian logbook.
During a sympathetic restoration completed in 2011, all mechanical components were extensively refurbished. New exhaust system, improved soundproofing and heat insulation were fitted.  The car is complete with optional Campagnolo “Millerighe” alloys, original aerial radio and a modern unit hidden in the glovebox.
Attractively finished in a factory correct shade of “Rosso Alfa” red complimented by “Tabacco Lusso” brown leather interior, the car is beautifully presented throughout and is in prefect running order.
Performance: Max speed: 195 km/h Average fuel consumption: 13 l/100 km Weight: 1020 kg Length: 4.08 m

1958 AUSTIN HEALEY ‘ FROG EYE’ SPRITE MK1

This MK1 Sprite from 1958 has been the subject of much restoration and maintenance going back to 2002. There is a large history file of bills and invoices that include recent work in 2012 in which the car was fitted with a new clutch and the cylinder head rebuilt with an unleaded conversion. It featured in the Feb.’13 test drive edition of Classic Car Mart where it was described as  being ‘one of the best examples you will find !’ It remains in excellent mechanical condition and very fine overall cosmetic order throughout. A BMHT certificate that comes with the car shows it as a ‘Home Market’ right hand drive car, originally cherry red with red trim the car is now black with a cherry red interior. Retaining its original 948cc A series engine and with its correct steel bonnet this is a really fine example that drives as good as it looks, showing 14893 miles we have MoT’s that go back to 1998 when the milage was showing as 7259, the car will be supplied with a new MoT, UK V5C logbook, parts books and a service / workshop manual.

1983 FORD CORTINA 2.0 GL ESTATE
The Ford Cortina MKV was announced on the 24th August 1979 and prices started at £3475 for a basic 1.3 model. The engines were improved from the MKIV models with improved power output and fuel economy. The estate model combined the MKIV bodyshell with the MKV front body pressings. The final year of production for the Cortina was 1982 and our example is a very late car that was first registered on the 1st February 1983. The Cortina was a huge success right through its long term production run from the 1960's through to the 1980's. Up to and including 1981 the Cortina was the best selling car in the UK and in March 2009 the Cortina was still the third most popular car sold in Britain. The estate versions have always proved popular and are becoming increasingly more desirable.
We have taken this Cortina Estate in part exchange from a regular customer based in Norwich. The car has been used mainly for weekend use and some corporate advertising. The last owner, a Company Director had the car sign written with corporate logos but on arrival with us they were removed. On arrival we were pleased to note excellent, straight body panels and no rust issues, however on removal of the sign writing, the red paintwork was dull and we took the opportunity to re-paint the car giving is a stunning paint finish. The car has recently been treated to new shock absorbers, suspension bushes, wheel cylinders and front anti-roll bar bushes and has come to us in good useable condition. The Cortina records a mileage of 95000 which is commensurate with the tidy original upholstery and strong running gear. The Ford drives superbly with a nice quiet engine, strong gearbox and excellent handling and brakes.

 1963 DAIMLER DART SP250 'C' SPEC MODEL
Beautifully finished in bright red with black Connolly leather interior with matching carpets, complimented by a black soft top. A colour coded factory hard top is sold with the car and a matching black tonneau cover also accompanies the motor car. The car was first registered in May 1963 and we have traced the ownership back to 1975 and can confirm that the vehicle has had only 3 previous keepers in 39 years. We can also confirm that all numbers are matching and the current registration number on the car is the original one from new. The vehicle has been restored to concours condition. The history folder contains, current and previous V5's, current and previous MoT certificates, DVLA paperwork, the worldwide listing of Daimler SP250's, David Manners part listing, previous road fund licences and holders, correspondence, invoices, images of the restoration, chassis lubrication diagram and the original Daimler SP250 Owner's Handbook. This is a very rare and sought after car as only 256 pure C spec models were produced and only 1453 RHD cars in total were manufactured. This concours Daimler drives very well and is a wonderful example of a truly great Sportscar.

1919 STELLITE 2-Seat Tourer & Dickey
In 1913 a light car called the Stellite had been introduced by Wolseley and manufactured by the Electrical and Ordnance Accessories Company Ltd., a subsidiary of Vickers. By 1915 war had brought an end to production, as Wolseley concentrated on the manufacture of V-8 aero engines.
The Stellite has a 1100cc, 4 cylinder, monobloc engine with overhead inlet valves and detachable head. The gearbox has only two forward speeds and reverse and is mounted in the rear axle. Steering is by rack and pinion and the chassis is of wood, reinforced with flitch plates.
CT 1201, has spent the last 25 years or so in a barn in Ireland, having little use and before that was part of a large Edwardian motor collection. Now back in the UK, having an old V5 and now on the handle! In sound, but mellow condition, light and easy to drive. Will require further fettling. The car is VCC dated (in 1970), and was issued with its number in 1921. The earliest known example!
Also with the car comes an original hand book, (an extra at the time) and some original tools.

1932 ALFA ROMEO 1750 GRAN TURISMO COMPRESSORE - GAVIN MCGUIRE

1932 ALFA ROMEO 1750
GRAN TURISMO COMPRESSORE

I have to open this description by saying that nothing quite prepares you, no matter how many photographs you have seen, for the elegance glamour and presence of this car. I suppose this should not be surprising as the first 1750 Alfa Romeo to carry this “Flying Star” coachwork, created for Josette Pozzo by Carrozeria Touring of Milan, won first prize at the 1931 Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance! (N.B. see footnote below for details of its latest show win!). By the way you can see the origins of this bodywork in Touring designer Giuseppe Serigni’s earlier work on an Isotta Fraschini which was also called Flying Star.
Probably the most authoritative book on Alfa Romeo “Tutte le Vetture Dal 1910” - All Cars from 1910 - was written by Luigi Fusi, a long standing Alfa Romeo design engineer who was appointed to establish the Alfa Romeo Museum in Milan (which is well worth a visit if you get the chance). According to his very detailed volume this car, on chassis number 101014946 with its corresponding engine number 101014946, was a 5th series 6C 1750 Gran Turismo Compressore built in 1932.
I gather that it was exported to Australia in 1932 for an English doctor and that in the early 1940s it was damaged in a serious road accident. It was apparently found in the 1970s by an Alfa Romeo specialist called Nick Langford who set about restoring it including having a replacement chassis made using the irreparably damaged original one as a pattern.
The rolling chassis with original engine, gearbox, running gear, brakes and axles was purchased in the mid 1980s by well known old car exponent Werner Oswald who then sold it to a private German collector who continued the restoration work.
All mechanical aspects of the car were overhauled or rebuilt including having a new alloy cylinder head fitted to allow the use of unleaded petrol and extensive work was done on the all mechanics, the electrical system, the clutch, the gearbox, the back axle and brakes etc. etc. There is a comprehensive set of German invoices in the file plus many pictures showing the work in progress.
Tom Bowhill of Cheltenham was then commissioned to build the new body. He had previously restored the original Josette Pozzo Flying Star and had the correct drawings and wooden bucks for this model so was the ideal choice to carry out this important part of the restoration. There is no doubt that he did a superb job as the standard of finish is one the best I have seen for some time. For the record we don’t know for certain what its original coachwork was though Fusi does show pictures of several different Touring bodied 1750 G.T.C. models including the ‘31 Villa d’Este Flying Star spider so its styling is contemporary with its chassis.
As well as the body being a work of art, so is the 6 cylinder twin cam supercharged engine which not only looks good but sounds lovely as well. According to Fusi the supercharger boosts the power to 80 CV at 4,400 RPM compared with the 55 CV of the unblown engine. It is certainly more than enough to give this car very lively performance which, combined with its lovely four speed gearbox, excellent chassis, good suspension, positive steering and brakes make it a genuine pleasure to drive.
It is rare that a supercharged 1750 Alfa comes on the market and we expect there will be very strong interest in it. Given the demand for these cars we trust you will understand that we will be looking for serious buyers who appreciate its market value.
IMPORTANT NOTE The Josette Pozzo "Flying Star" has just won the Best In Show prize presented by HRH Prince Michael of Kent at the recent Hampton Court Concours of Elegance - see http://concoursofelegance.co.uk/bestofshow for a picture and more information.
