1951 HOTCHKISS  ANJOU 1350


Manufactured 1951 and sold to an army officer who left the car in a barn, It was rediscovered in 1981 by a dealer/enthusiast and over the next few years restored to its former glory. The paper work suggests five owners in total, the last owner has owned and cherished the car since 1991. The engine has been rebuilt and body work repainted in this time, Seats reupholstered in the correct material, the rest of the interior is original and excellent.This example has the manual four speed gearbox fitted not the Cotal electric box. Nice to drive having plenty of power from this large four cylinder engine, and right hand drive of course. Mileage indicated is 55000 km and probably correct.The car is still French registered but will be registered here when sold. £17750

    ASTON MARTIN V8 COUPE

     Limited Edition #4 of 9 built

    Background:
    The V8 Coupé Limited Edition made its world debut at the British International Motor Show on the 18th of October 1994. The suspension system and external appearance, owes more to the Vantage than the Virage. The following are selective quotes from the press release issued by Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd.
    "With a maximum speed in excess of 150 mph the Aston Martin V8 Coupe Limited Edition offers 10% more power than the Virage or Volante and there is an equivalent reduction in exhaust emission levels through the use of more efficient design 32 valve cylinder heads and a new electronic management system for the 5.3 litre V8 engine. Production of the V8 Coupe Limited Edition will be restricted to no more than 10 units for delivery during the next six months. (only nine cars were eventually built)

    Each V8 Coupe Limited Edition model will be finished in a dark metallic "British Racing" green (the colour used for all cars was Deep Jewel Green Metallic) with a contrasting saddle brown Connolly hide upholstery which is matched to cream and biscuit alcantara for the roof lining and interior door trims."
    In a break with tradition burr elm is used for the instrument and facia panels in preference to the more traditional burr walnut used on other Aston Martin and Lagonda models.
    "A special 'V' motif radiator grille has been designed to give the V8 Coupe Limited Edition model its own distinctive appearance while acknowledging its heritage in relation to the Virage, Volante and Vantage.
    Priced at £137,500 the Aston Martin V8 Coupe Limited Edition has 4 wheel anti-lock disc brakes, an advanced design climate control system, a driver's side air bag and a choice of a 5-speed manual or 4-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission."

    Summary:
    There could be any number of reasons for the next owner to choose this V8 Coupe LE as their first Aston Martin or to add to a collection.
    There is the rarity of the model - Aston Martin planned to build ten cars but the current owner has been told by Tim Cottingham of Aston Martin Heritage that only nine were in fact built. Or it may be the immaculate service and MOT history evidencing the care and attention that the car has received. And of course there is the attractively low mileage which always appeal.
    We think there is a simple summarising reason to choose this car – simply put, it is the best.

    Vehicle History
    In the early 1990’s, Lionel Greenslade had decided to treat himself to a new Aston Martin and chose the newest model, a DB7- cutting edge design from Ian McCallum produced in Aston Martin’s newest factory.
    Part of the order process was a personal invitation to visit Aston Martin at Newport Pagnell and during his tour he was distracted by the noise from the factory body shop and was mesmerised by the traditional construction of the aluminium bodies of the hand built Aston Martins. As a result, he changed his order from the DB7 to the very best of the traditional cars, the V8 Coupe Limited Edition that had the added bonus of rarity as his was one of just 10 cars planned, and in fact only 9 were built.
    On behalf of the first owner, Byron International sold the car to the current (second owner) in 2011 and when they met, Lionel said that the car had never been out in the wet – he then hesitated and corrected himself remembering the one occasion when returning from an MOT, he had been caught by a sudden shower.
    Such statements are commonplace in classified advertising. But when he returned the car to Stratstones of Wilmslow for its next scheduled service, the current owner engaged in conversation with the Service Manager, Keith who knew the car and the previous owner well. He confirmed that on a number of occasions, Lionel would book his car in for service and then phone on the day to postpone if the weather was not good enough.
    A further reflection of Mr Greenslade’s approach was that, having ordered embroidered Aston Martin over mats for the car, he then purchased additional plain mats lay over the Aston Martin mats to protect them!

    As for the low mileage and originality of the car – look no further than the under bonnet area. By design, the airbox intakes are covered in a thin layer of protected foam rubber – you won’t see this very often because the heat of the engine and general use sees these protective covers harden and disintegrate, never to be renewed. This engine sports its original specification with those covers intact. In fact the whole car has that patina of originality that cannot be reproduced by restoration or a tin of polish – the exception being the wheels, because they have been refurbished as part of the essential maintenance of the car.
    And it was a reflection of respect for the care and attention this car had received under Mr Greenslade’s stewardship that the current owner has maintained the same fastidious approach including choosing to keep the servicing at Stratstones of Wilmslow to ensure continuity of care. He has presented the car with a full set of books for the car, the tool kit is complete and includes gloves, the service history file includes every tax disc and he has even left the original number plates and rear window sticker identifying the supplying dealer.
    So for the collector, the most apt description for this superlative V8 Coupe Limited Edition is summed up in the title of the Palawan Press book that is included in the sale - “Aston Martin the Compleat Car”.

    1955 AUSTIN FX3 FL1


    The basis for the FL1 was the Austin FX3 taxicab which was sold in the United Kingdom by Austin from 1948 to 1958. It was designed to comply with the Metropolitan Police Conditions of Fitness for London taxicabs, but was used in other towns and cities in the UK. It was commissioned from Austin by taxi dealers Mann & Overton and built by Carbodies of Coventry on a chassis supplied by Austin.


    The first prototype, the FX had a 1.8-litre sidevalve engine that proved inadequate for the job. The second prototype, the FX2 had a 1.8-litre petrol engine, but this was replaced by the third version, the FX3, which had a 2.2-litre ohv petrol engine. Fitted with an all-steel body from Carbodies , the FX3 was registered as JXN 842, and it and the FX2 (registered as JXN 841) went on test in the summer of 1948. It was announced at the Commercial Motor Exhibition in the following November and went into full production in 1949. 



    Description and History
    A Hire Car version, the FL1 was also made, which had four full doors, a bench front seat, column gear-change and an umbrella-type handbrake handle. The two occasional seats faced forward. A 'driveaway' chassis-cab was also supplied to outside coachbuilders. Several shooting brake ('woodie') bodies were made, as well as newspaper vans for the three London evening papers, the Star, News and Standard. Built in 1955, this FLI was professionally restored and converted to a Shooting Car, by specialist trimmer Northumbrian Leather of Newcastle on Tyne, based on the FL1 the shooting car has received a full restoration, and a period of recent recommissioning in our workshops.

    Condition Report Overall
    The car is in excellent restored condition, with a unique interior, and the benefit of a full length sunroof. It would make an ideal vehicle for Estate use, a promotional vehicle, or town car, especially if you live in London.
    Body / Coachwork / Interior
    Fully restored in the style of an Estate / Shooting Car, the interior being trimmed in Ostrich skin and buffalo hide, with contrasting tartan interior, fitted trunk and full length sunroof.

    Engine and Mechanicals
    The four cylinder Austin 2.2 litre is based on the Austin Atlantic engine and was also used in the Healey 100/4. The engine is in very good condition following servicing in our workshops.

    Highly original, low mileage lady owner from Japan, possibly the most original we have seen. 
    A Fun, wind in the hair off roader or country lane cruiser.
    In 1953 Mitsubishi secured the rights to build the Willys under their own name and the Mitsubishi Jeep was born.  


    In the USA the Willys was built till 1965 but in Japan Mitsubishi had a good thing going so they kept the line in production till 1998.
    This Jeep has the preferred uprated 2.7L Turbo engine 4DR6 engine producing 2699 cc. It has been lovingly maintained and carefully driven in Japan giving it heritage and maintaining originality.
    The 4DR6 turbo direct injection engine is derived from 4DR5 2.7L naturally aspirated engine. The head is modified to a whirlpool combustion chamber, direct injection system (Compression ratio 17.5) to produce maximum power, torque and fuel efficiency of 15.5km/liter or 36.6 miles / US gallon. The Turbo is a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries waste gate equipped TD04 type turbocharger.
    J53s have full time hubs, reverse turn glow plugs and the ultra tough 24V system. The passenger seat folds up completely to give very easy access to the rear of the Jeep. This jeep has a stereo fitted into the glovebox with rear speakers and amp.
    Crawl down the steepest hill or race up the nearest mountain, this gutsy miniature tank can handle it all with switchable low gear and 4WD. This J53 is a turn-key, off road capable unit - one of the best off road vehicles ever made.

    The 105 Talbot, so-called in period following a discovery that its engine produced 105bhp at 4500rpm, was designed by the brilliant German-Swiss Georges Roesch. Roesch was chief engineer at Talbot before the marque’s Darracq takeover; one of many changes of ownership in its complex history. In 1925, Roesch moved to London to focus on Talbot’s racing models, supplying examples to the legendary Fox and Nicholls privateer team who built racing bodies for the cars and campaigned them competitively. The early 1930s were lean times for Sunbeam Talbot Darracq (STD), yet Roesch’s engines were so good that Fox and Nicholls’ backing allowed them to go racing in earnest.

    1931 saw the birth of the 105 and the resulting success on track through Fox and Nicholls kept the Talbot marque’s road sales increasing as other STD fortunes continued to decline. By the beginning of 1934, Sunbeam Talbot Darracq was in real trouble, and the Talbot marque was sold off to Rootes to redeem an outstanding bank loan. It was, at this time, that Roesch was at the peak of his career and design ability. His cars are renowned for their cohesive and economic design, and his engines for their bulletproof simplicity. As Anthony Blight noted in his go-to book on the subject, George Roesch and the Invincible Talbot, the road versions of 1934 were ‘more desirable than ever to the discriminating motorist with a taste for long fast journeys’.

    AYL 2 was one of the last Talbots built for competition work. It was ordered by a Dr E.J.H. Roth, who was a leading Harley Street consultant and keen Talbot racer, with the sole purpose of competing at Brooklands. The body was to the same outline as the works Alpine team cars of 1934 and the specification also included Zeiss headlamps, a Brooklands exhaust system, Andre Telecontrol shock absorbers and freedom from the incumbencies of hood and windscreen. As such, the car is widely regarded as a semi-works example. It was fitted one of just eight Alpine Talbot bodies ever made.

    Painted green with green wheels, AYL 2 appears for the first time in Brooklands records at a race day on 13th October, 1934. It was raced by both Roth and a WM Couper, the latter of whom won race 2 of that day with the Talbot. This fact is recorded in Motorsport magazine in November 1934, with an accompanying image.
    For 1935 season, AYL 2 was uprated to single-seater specification with a new body manufactured by The English Racing Automobile Company (ERA). For the BRDC 500 mile race of 1936, the car was prepared with works support to include the fitment of the new 3.3 litre engine. It was driven in this important race by C Staniland and M. Couper. On 1st June it was piloted twice by Roth at Brooklands in races 5 and 9 and again on 17th October in race 10.

    In the 1950s AYL 2 was purchased by Arthur Archer, a motor engineer from Essex, and then by revered marque specialist Ian Polson. Subsequently, it was purchased by a Mr. Nicholas Ward of Northern Ireland. AYL 2 was finally reunited with its original 1934 Alpine body and rebuilt by leading marque specialist, Pace Products.
    In later years, AYL 2 was part of renowned collector, John Ruston’s stable. As Mick Walsh wrote in his Classic & Sports Car road test of the 105, ‘That winning tradition has continued with another Roesch Talbot stalwart, John Ruston. Ruston’s team has set the pace wherever there has been a pre-war race for original cars in recent years, chasing down exotics at Le Mans, Spa and Silverstone. Better still, the Talbots even upstage post-war machines on Ruston’s favourite rallies….’ Indeed, AYL 2 has enjoyed success in recent years on the Tour Britannia, Le Mans Classic (two race wins) and Flying Scotsman Rally (which it won in 2013).

    This strong and successful post-vintage thoroughbred is eligible to compete in all the world’s best pre-war races and rallies, where it has known pedigree of attaining excellence. In the right hands, it is surely a car to be reckoned with.
