1980 TALBOT SUNBEAM LOTUS “ESSEX” - Manor Classic Cars Ltd York North Yorkshire

1980 TALBOT SUNBEAM LOTUS “ESSEX”

This very Talbot Sunbeam Lotus was used extensively as the VIP car by the Essex Lotus F1 Team and she is known to have been graced by Colin Chapman, Nigel Mansell, Mario Andretti, Elio de Angelis and Carlos Reutemann during the 1980 & 1981 seasons.
With just one owner from new and a wealth of receipts and invoices documenting the near £60,000 of restoration which this car has received, this is an opportunity not to be missed!
An abbreviated version of the story of this important car is as follows:
In July 1979, a radical American called David Thieme wanted to promote his Essex Petroleum interests to the audience of Formula One.  His presence at the 1979 Silverstone Grand Prix and subsequent encounter with Colin Chapman of Lotus gave rise to one of the most ambitious partnerships in the history of the sport, and changed the face of corporate hospitality as we now know it.   Until Essex Motorsport arrived on the scene, there was no celebration utilising the spectacle and thrills of F1 GPs to provide a backdrop to high-level entertaining.  It’s true that most teams had some form of standard American motorhome for the drivers to use, but Essex commissioned a triple decker with showers, a bar, and a briefing room – all firsts – and dining space for over 130, including the panoramic open-air top deck for spectating.

Responsibility for this circus fell to Julian Rivett, the Aerial Displays manager during the 1980 season & Director of Operations during the 1981 season with Essex.  Julian is also the first and only owner of the Talbot Sunbeam Lotus ‘Essex’ we’re offering for sale.  From his residence at the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo, Julian organised and delivered the hospitality for the entire team.
Built to European specification to fit in with life in Monte Carlo, and plucked from the production line to be “Essexed” before being re-inserted and completed, our Talbot Sunbeam Lotus was then picked up by Julian Rivett – on the registration it still wears today – from a wet and cold Hethel in April 1980 and driven to the South of France.  In typical Essex style their presence was highly visible on the circuits, with Rivett’s own car providing the authentic Lotus Team Essex VIP taxi service to ferry the drivers and VIP’s from the airports to the races.

Now, many years later, this car presents magnificently having been lavished with many thousands of pounds and countless hours of restoration to make this car the very best available, and with the most unique history.
The restoration began in 2012 with strip-down and bodywork preparation completed by multi-concours winning Professional Auto Centre Ltd, Vauxhall, London.  They were to prepare the bodywork of the car including the tub, underside, sills, valances and wings, and repaint the car to a very high standard.  They were also responsible for the beautifully re-trimmed interior, and minor mechanical works including gearbox and clutch assembly.
Engine work was the domain of renowned engineer Phil Davison of Northants, who besides being one of the finest names you could hope to associate with your TSL, also happen to be the former Talbot Competitions Department engine builder responsible for all the ‘Works’ Sunbeam Lotus engines that ensured that Talbot won the 1981 Manufacturer’s World Rally Championship.  It’s safe to say, he knows these engines intimately.  Some £6,000 was well spent through Phil to carry out a full rebuild of the original engine unit, machine all necessary original parts, supply any missing parts, and thoroughly test on the dyno.
Reassembly and tuning however was entrusted to the hugely knowledgeable team at Skip Brown Cars in Cheshire who have extensive experience with the Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, both road and rally cars, since 1980.  They tirelessly restored, reconditioned, repaired or sourced most every component that was re-married to this car making this one of the most accurate and sympathetic restorations we have ever encountered.  Over the period of nearly two years this TSL was rebuilt, shaken-down, re-tested and thoroughly put through its paces to ensure its quality.
Accordingly, having now been through the hands of some of the very best in the business, we believe our Talbot Sunbeam Lotus is without equal and beyond reproach.  We invite you to come and see this unrepeatable, one-owner and privileged car for yourself.

2005 AC COBRA COUPE

I am very proud to offer for sale this 2005 Stunning Shelby cobra Daytona (super performance factory car)
This car is 1/9 cars built by the factory and the only licensed continuation of the original Shelby Daytona coupe racing cars of the 1960s. The car has a front mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, with a 55R/45F weight distribution. The body was designed by Pete Brock (who designed the original race cars) and a chassis designed by the late Bob Negstad (who designed the original race chassis), it is viewed by many to be the most authentic modern continuation of the original, very limited run of Shelby Daytona coupes. It is the only Shelby Daytona coupe approved and licensed by Shelby and the only Shelby Daytona coupe aside from the original half-dozen cars eligible for the Shelby Registry.
The cars were fitted with 6.7 litre Roush engine based on a 351 Windsor block producing about 515 BHP and with the 6 speed Tremac gearbox and that would propel the car to 210 MPH and a 0-60 in about 3.9 seconds.
This fantastic example is finished in Dark Green with Black leather seats and has covered only 7,000 miles from new, this car has been very well looked after and has been in 2 private collections the first being with a we known Cobra collector who used the car for European rallies, the second owner (last owner) is a passionate collector with a real eye for detail and has a fabulous collection of about 20 interesting and rare cars.
This is a fantastic opportunity to own such a rare and stunning motor car

1968 MERCURY COUGAR
Mercury joined the ‘pony car race’ with its Cougar in 1967.  It was in most respects a restyled Ford Mustang but with a chassis 3 inches longer than its Ford sibling but otherwise housing the same 302 V8 engine and Cruise-O-Matic transmission.
This 1968 car is finished in its original colours of Madras Blue and Light Aqua Décor Bucket Seats.  The car has been well maintained with a significant overhaul in 2015 when the car was repainted, a new Edelbrock carburetor was fitted (this upgrade makes a huge difference to the performance and smooth running of the car), new bushes were fitted, new fuel lines and air cleaner among other work.  The car has a good history file with 50+ invoices showing the care and detail that has gone into it, there is also a Marti report on the car and as a nice touch it still has it original handbooks, sales brochures and original owner warranty card.
The car is MOT’d through to September 2017 and is ready to go
A classic 1960s pony car in a great colour combination and a good history file to back it up.

1960 FORD THUNDERBIRD V8 352Cu

Offered for sale an exceptional matching numbers 1960 Ford Thunderbird with superbly well documented history.
Advertised in 1960 as the ‘Worlds Most Wanted Car’, this Thunderbird was ordered new through the Pearson Ford Co. San Diego dealership as a husbands Christmas gift to his wife. The ‘original’ hand written order sheet, dated 19th November 1960 shows the car was specified with the following options.

  • Ford Thunderbird Hardtop with 352 cu/in V8 Motor.
  • Adriatic Green with matching two-tone green interior.
  • Cuise-O-Matic gearbox.
  • Magicare Heater.
  • Console Radio.
  • Tinted Glass.
  • Outside Mirrors.
  • Power Lift Windows.
  • Power Drivers Seat.
  • Power Brakes.
  • Power Steering.

With a purchase price of $5010 less dealer discount, a sizeable amount of money for a car back in 1960 there is no surprise to see the owner needed finance and the history folder even contains a letter from the bank thanking the owners for the final instalment in Jan 1964. Reading further on into 2” History folder it is great to see the car was obviously loved and cosseted by her owners as in 1969, with 36,000miles on the clock the T-Bird was put into storage and remained there until 1980 when the owners, Howard and Edna Hoffman, now resurrected the Thunderbird. Giving her a fresh re-paint she was entered in the Vintage Thunderbird Club of America Concours Awards in 1982, now showing 40,461 miles on the clock, and scored 287 points out of 300, and the following year coming first in class with 288/300 points.

Move forward to 1990 and the T-Bird finally left the Hoffmans and also the USA and was imported into the UK. Still in stunning condition the Thunderbird has featured in a number of Classic Car periodicals, the book ‘Ford T-Bird' and been seen at various shows it was again sold in 1991 having now covered 45,000 miles to the Treasurer of the Association of American Car Clubs UK. During this time she reached the finals of the Classic American Car of the Year in 1993 and later that year had the engine re-built by Holbay Engineering in Ipswich. Mechanically the car is in excellent condition. The V8 fires easily and settles into a distant burble, never intrusive, as should be exepected for a luxury sedan. The 3 speed auto operates smoothly and the 'Power' brakes have a firm bite, giving plenty of reasurance whilst out for a cruise.

After an appearance in the TV show ‘Lovejoy' in 1994 records indicate that she has been cherished by 3 further owners and that mileage, now, of 58,500, although not warranted is more than likely genuine, with 17 previous MOT’s supporting her mileage.
This remarkable Thunderbird is an real gem. The bodywork remains in very good condition, I belive she has only had the one repaint, back in the early 80's. Panel gaps are consistent around the car and there is no evidence of any rust, just a couple of age related marks, none of which detract from the car. She attracts admiring glances wherever she's driven and will often draw a crowd if stationary for any length of time. We have had the car on the ramps in our workshop and can confirm the car has never had any underbody welding, staggering for a 56yr old car! Chrome work remains very good and the interior, as far as we can tell, is completely original and in remarkable condition, with working electric seats etc, she even comes with a set of Thunderbird over mats (you'll even find her oiginal ones in the trunk).
The looks are classic 1960’s Americana and sitting in and driving the car you really feel transported back to the days of Space race, the Kennedys’ and cruising the Pacific Coast Highway, where this car spent so many happy memories with the Hoffman family. Offered with an MOT to March 2017, Original bill of sale, Original Owners Manual, copies of Thunderbird articles, her Concours Award score sheets, countless records / bills, Ford Thunderbird overmats this is a car is one for the real enthusiast.
