1991 PORSCHE 944 S2 CABRIOLET

MODEL HISTORY

The 944 was Porsche’s mid range sports car positioned between the 924 and 911. It uses a rear-wheel drive water cooled 4 cylinder engine mounted at the front of the car, the gearbox is mounted at the rear providing better weight distribution which results in one of the best handling cars to come out of the 80′s.
The aim of the car was to provide a luxurious long distance cruiser as well as an exciting powerful road car. Its body was based upon the 924 Carrera GT, like the 924 it has a sloping glass hatchback providing a practical luggage storage area. The sunroof was a popular option as it was a removable metal panel providing a near Targa like open road experience. The 944 was introduced for sale in 1982 and ran on for 10 years, it came in either a coupe 2+2 body or a very attractive Cabriolet.
There were several models made but it’s the S2 Cabriolet that is featured here. The S2′s engine capacity was raised to 3-litres making it the largest 4 cylinder engine in the world at the time and it provided an impressive 211bhp and 207lb of torque. It was Porsche’s official replacement to the 220bhp Turbo and uses many of that car’s chassis components including its stronger trans-axle, drive-shafts, brakes, wheels and tyres. It looks just like a Turbo too – the wrap-around plastic bumper/spoiler smooths its snout, simple and attractive disc alloys fill its flared arches, and the under slung rear wing firms up its tail styling. When launched it’s main competition came from the Audi Quattro and Lotus Esprit Turbo, the S2 out accelerated the Quattro in 0-60 and 1/4 mile sprints and was just a smidgen behind the Esprit but its main trump card was its flexibility; in 4th gear, every 20mph increment from 10-100mph takes less than 7 seconds. No turbocharged car of the time could match this consistency nor deliver the sort of effortless and decisive progress. This smooth power delivery gives the S2 the throttle sensitivity for some predictable and entertaining cornering.

EQUIPMENT

Electric Windows, Electric mirrors, Electric Convertible Hood, Electric Front Seats, AC, Climate control, Leather Upholstery, Panasonic AlphaTuner cassett player, FM/AM, Immobiliser, Cigar lighter, ash tray, Digital clock.

EXTERIOR

The 944 continues to prosper through a sustained marriage of both style and substance, particularly with this example resplendent in Crystal Silver Metallic. The paintwork has a delightfully consistent hue throughout.
The bonnet, wings and doors all line up as they should, with excellent panel fit. The navy blue hood is a beautiful contrast to the lustrous paint work and shows in sublime condition with no scratches or marks; even the white stitching presents well with no dis-colouring.
Trims, rubbers and plastics retain excellent original integrity with lights free of cracks or moisture. Further indications of the very low mileage covered by this example.

INTERIOR
The Midnight blue interior compliments the exterior wonderfully well, with dark blue carpets again offering layers in the cabin to balance the aesthetic. The perforated leather seats retain excellent comfort and feel firm yet supple to the touch.
Pleasingly all carpets and gearbox surround are free from any unsightly marks or stains. The new electric hood operates smoothly and without fuss whilst the original Panasonic head unit contributes to in-car entertainment.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Engine and drivetrain are both in fine fettle with minimal mileage covered. Ignition is without hesitation and the car settles to a steady idle, with clutch and engagement positive and smooth.
As for the engine bay itself, presentation is similar to both exterior and interior; extremely clean, tidy and with no signs of abuse.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The series 90 wheels are beautiful in their simplicity with this set unmarked and wrapped in excellent premium tyres all round.
The braking system works as it should with the discs showing no signs of major wear, the car feels tight and true.

HISTORY FILE

This 944 was supplied new to Official Porsche Centre Cumbria and has been in the custody of just three previous owners.
Built in the last year of 944 production, this example presents as it should with such little mileage covered since new. Its mileage backed up by all past MOT certificates.
The car’s history file contains all the relevant records, invoices, leather wallet, service manuals and all it’s previous MOT’s.
