1935 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Barker Sports Saloon.

A lovely example of the sought after Continental model, in excellent condition mechanically, structurally and cosmetically. Nicely finished in black & red, with black leather upholstery and red carpets. Chromework, interior wood are also excellent, and an external sun visor with tinted glass has just been fitted, adding character and balance to the car's design. The engine has recently been overhauled, and following 2,000 miles of ‘shakedown’, is now running very well and driving nicely, with plenty of power, light steering, excellent brakes, etc. Expenditure over the last few years, fully documented in the large box file of history which comes with the car, amounts to something in the region of £85,000. New tyres just fitted, and offered MoT tested until October 2018.

Snippets: Petroleum, Animal Feeds & a Titled Family.
The first owner of 42UK was George Samuel Engle (1883/1944) - in 1918 he had changed his surname by deed poll from Engel to Engle. Engle was a senior manager of Asiatic Petroleum which was part of the Combined Petroleum Company which later became Shell; in the biography of Sir Henri Deterding written by Glyn Roberts – George Engle is referred to as “Secretary & prime mystery man of Asiatic Petroleum”. Within 3 years, 42UK had been sold to Richard Poole Silcock, a scion of R. Silcock & Sons, feed merchants later acquired & renamed BOCM Silcock. In 1909 Richard’s father Thomas Butler Silcock had commissioned T. H. Mawson & Son to design Arthfield House which was built in 1920, Mawson’s also did a garden layout at Thornton Hall and a woodland walk at Bleasdale Tower – this for Richard’s uncle W. A. Silcock. The Silcock family also bred pigs which were fed exclusively on their own products & the animals won many awards in the “Bacon from 1st Cross Pigs” with their Landrace cross Large Whites. Within 12 months, just before the outbreak of WWII the PII was acquired by Lady Effie Millington-Drake who had returned to the UK from Uraguay ahead of her husband Sir Eugen John Henry Vanderstegen Millington-Drake, they had been stationed in Uraguay since 1934 as Minister. Lady Effie was the daughter of the 1st Earl of Inchcape – businessman & colonial administrator in India who later became Chairman of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company ("P&O"). Effie’s sister Elsie (1893/1928) was a lady of many talents - aviator, actress, & interior designer for P & O, she vanished whilst attempting an east-westerly Atlantic flight. When the Millington-Drake’s travelled they did so in style with 30 Louis Vuitton Suitcases & of course outfits from Worth for Lady Effie (an heiress in her own right). Sir Eugen entered the diplomatic service in 1912, his first posting was in St Petersburg, later placements included Paris, Buenos Aires, Bucharest, Copenhagen & Uruguay. Sir Eugen was a keen sportsman - this was reflected in that he served on Olympic committees in 1936 & 1948. After WWII 42UK was sold to G. H. Walford (1902/68) of Sherborne St John, a solicitor whose lineage can be traced back to the 13th Century.

1987 LHD ROLLS-ROYCE CORNICHE II CONVERTIBLE

Chassis Number - HCX16412
Registration Number - D420 FDL
Price - £62,500

A truly lovely example, which has very likely covered just 23,000 miles from new, and only 5,000 miles in the last 25 years! The condition is commensurate with that mileage level, and the car is totally sound, very smart, and very nicely finished in Magnolia with double blue pinstripe, deep blue leather, piped Magnolia, and Cumberland Stone carpets, piped dark blue, all as originally specified. A correct, high-quality new hood was very nicely fitted less than two years ago. Originally delivered to Florida, but since 1991 has resided in Spain until this year. A superb example, offered U K registered for the first time and MoT tested until August 2018.

Snippets: The 1st Nautical Black Box
It is not known the name of the 1st owner but we do know that the car was shipped from the UK to Fort Lauderdale in September 1986 aboard the 28,000-tonne container vessel “Gulf Spirit”. The Gulf Spirit was the 1st vessel which carried a “Black Box” even though it is normally bright orange!! In April 1989 Lloyds of London decided to install this trial device in order to record information that could assist crews to save fuel, avoid damage to the cargo and if the vessel sank the Black Box would jettison itself and float! The device and its installation (in 1989) cost £60,000 and used more than 1km of cabling inside of the hull to connect the various gauges and accelerometers to the recorder. After spending just 4 years in the USA in 1991 HCX16412 was acquired by its second and last owner - a Middle-eastern Prince – who shipped the car to Spain where it remained until earlier this year

1934 ROLLS-ROYCE 20/25 WINDOVERS LIMOUSINE - The Real Car Co

THROUGH THE SHOWROOM DOOR
WHO WOULD DRIVE A CAR LIKE THIS?
 The Real Car Co Ltd.
COED Y PARC, BETHESDA, GWYNEDD, LL57 4YS, NORTH WALES

1934 ROLLS-ROYCE 20/25 WINDOVERS LIMOUSINE

An unusual and interesting car for at least two reasons: Firstly, the car remained with one family from new until 2004 – 70 years! For the following ten years, the car was with one owner, who has cared for the car very well, taking it on several rallies, including two Continental ones, and it has been trouble free, performing nicely throughout. Secondly, the car has recently been repainted in its rather attractive and without doubt original colour. All-in-all a lovely car, slightly out of the ordinary, sound, in good order  running nicely and very appealing. Complete with fitted toolkit, rear-mounted trunk with fitted suitcases, a full set of 'Ace' wheel discs, correct lamps, etc. Serviced, prepared and MoT tested until February 2016.

Snippets:  Who is this Actress?
After a few years of ownership the first owner who was an engineer decided to give GHA16 to his wife, she was a musical comedy dancer/actress of some repute.  The earliest note of her appearance on the stage is in 1921 in a Charles B. Cochran production “The League of Notions”, starring alongside the beautiful, wealthy & scandalous Hungarian-American twins better known as the Dolly Sisters (protégés of G. Selfridge). In 1926 after just 5 years on the stage she was immortalised on the Murray cigarettes cards alongside fellow artistes such as Mary Pickford, Ivor Novello, Harold Lloyd & Norma Shearer and in 1927 her portrait was painted by Bernard Fleetwood-Walker & shown in the RBSA Spring Exhibition.  As an actress she was well known within the entertainment world for her menagerie which included Billy, her pet Budgerigar!  The only time she took from the stage was between 1929 & 1935 in order to devote time to their son.  In due course their son himself took to the stage with his first London appearance as a singer in Henry VII, he later emigrated to Canada where his acting career continued both on stage & TV.  After returning to the UK in the 1960s he took over the role of being the voice of Virgil Tracy in Thunderbirds!  And in 1977 he had a cameo appearance as Captain Forsyth in “The Spy Who Loved Me
”.

 1934 BENTLEY 3 1/2 LITRE TOURER
 http://www.realcar.co.uk/B130BLext20.JPG
A really well executed and faithful reproduction of a ‘cutaway door’ Vanden Plas tourer, constructed by Dick Brockman in the 1960s. The very first Derby Bentley built, B1AE, was bodied to this design, which is generally considered to be very desirable and attractive. The whole car is in fine, ready-to-use condition, clean, sound, smart, correct, and fun to drive. Still smart cosmetically, with just the right amount of maturity to add appeal without being negative in any way. Has full wet-weather gear, side-screens, tonneau cover, fold-flat windscreen, aero screens, and a lovely set of Marchal lamps. A rare opportunity. Driving particularly nicely, with lovely, light steering and a lively, eager performance. MoT tested until July 2015.
Chassis No. B130BL.                                                                     Reg No. BGP 420.                                                      Under offer.
Snippets:  Twice a Lady of Diamonds:    Ordered for Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, MP, Mayor of Kimberley, founder of DeBeers Mines, Anglo-American Corporation, African Explosives and many other business ventures.  The 1930s was a period of family tragedies for the Oppenheimers, in September 1933 his nephew Sir Michael Oppenheimer (son of Bernard) died in an aircraft crash on takeoff from Johannesberg.  In February 1934 Sir Ernest’s wife Mary Lina Pollak died after a short illness, they had been married for 28 years; in June 1934 Ernest’s brother-in-law Leslie Pollak died & in April 1935 Frank Oppenheimer, Ernest & Mary’s youngest son died after heart failure whilst on holiday in Maderia.  The tragedies brought Sir Michael’s widow Lady Caroline and Sir Ernest together and on the 1st of June 1935 Sir Ernest & Lady Caroline were married, making her twice a Lady which is very apt for the wife of two diamond magnates.  In 1939 the next name shown on the chassis card is that of Stephen Richard Dean a solicitor at his office in Lincolns Inn, London whose clients included James Hope, 1st Baron Rankeillour of Buxton.  In 1952 B130BL was with Commander Noel Hunt RNVR who during WWII was T/Lt on HMS Coriolanus trawler mine-sweeper.  The tragedy Coriolanus was written by Shakespeare & is based on the life of the Roman leader Caius Martius who is given the name Coriolanus after his army defeats the city of Corioles.
