1934 TALBOT 75/AV105 ALPINE TEAM CAR
REPLICA TOURER
Registration No: AML 789
Chassis No: 34215

For anyone with even half an eye on the pre-war motoring scene, the Talbot AV105 Alpine Team cars won’t have gone unnoticed and thus will require little introduction. Designed by Georges Roesch, the works Talbot AV 105 Fox & Nicholl run team cars were hugely successful in both alpine road events and on the circuit. This success continues today with regular victories in both retrospective rally events as well as circuit events such as the Le Mans Classic and Goodwood Revival where not only do they regularly better much more exotic contemporary machinery but often pip a lot of post-war classics in the results tables.

Powered by a robust and lively 3-litre six-cylinder engine they produced over 100bhp at 3500rpm in the period and can be made to produce a lot more than this at higher revs now with the use of stronger engine internals. Mated to excellent handling, good brakes and easily operable pre-selector gearbox the combination both did and now does prove to be regularly unbeatable. One need only read Georges Roesch and the Invincible Talbot Anthony Blight to comprehend the level of success they enjoyed and also the unbelievable amount of Alpine testing carried out by Roesch to perfect his designs. As with the Bentleys and Lagondas of the period, many more standard road cars have been adapted to offer the experience of the racing cars on the same platform without the seven-figure price tags associated with the genuine team cars and we offer one such example here.
‘AML 789’ is well-known in historic circles and was rebuilt as a replica team car by Ian Polson for his son John to race. Using an original chassis and components sourced over many years by Ian Polson the rebuild was completed in 2009.  The Talbot was fitted with the first of the re-production aluminium block engines by Polson. This engine had been completed in 2006 and had the previous form having been fitted to one of the genuine team cars for a period of time. At this stage that genuine team car was raced successfully by the author and John Polson at Donington Park and even more successfully by John Polson and Patrick Blakeney-Edwards at the Le Mans Classic that year. When said team car was sold it was re-fitted with its original engine and thus the aluminium racing engine was spare and the ideal candidate for this rapid team car re-creation.
Once completed John Polson raced ‘AML 789’ with some considerable verve, picking up many strong results in historic racing over three seasons, with most of the results contained within the history file offered with the car. From Polson, the car went to a VSCC member who competed with the club until a leg injury forced him to purchase a different motor, and it was purchased by the current owner. A keen rally competitor and former winner of the Alpine Trial, the Talbot was purchased with rallies in mind and whilst outright victory has eluded his results have been strong and again photographs and results are included in the history file. During his ownership, the car has been back to Polson to be fitted with “calmer” shock absorbers for the road as well as a full windscreen and hood set up for long distance rally use. Recently the car has been with Dr Jonathan Rose who has done a lot of work on the brakes to ensure the car stops, as well as a 105, should.
The name Polson has been associated with Talbots for many decades and the Suffolk based concern have been responsible, at least to some degree, for the restoration and preparation of almost all the genuine team cars at some time or another.  To this end, this car comes from one of, if not, the most renowned Talbot racing stables in the world and performs accordingly. It is offered with a useful history file containing details of the work, photographs and results from events as well as FIA HTP Papers. It is well proven on both road and track and is the ideal race and rally weapon for those wanting to compete at the front.

1971 AF SPIDER
A joint venture between Colin Crabbe “Antique Automobiles” who was running a Formula 1 racing team at the time and designer Alexander ‘Sandy’ Fraser. The Spider was constructed to order in hardwood with mahogany faced marine ply and aluminium (though later cars were fibreglass). Mechanically, the cars were largely Mini based, and this particular car has the power of an Oselli tuned twin carburettor 1275cc engine. Driven 0-60 in under 6 seconds, the AF was quicker than a Porsche 911. It was apparently put through its paces by legendary Ronnie Peterson, lead driver of Crabbe’s F1 racing team. Sandy Fraser was a Morgan enthusiast which clearly influenced the Spider’s retro appearance, and motoring journals were very impressed with the Spider in 1971. Motor devoted a three page road test to the AF while Autocar concluded “the most stable and delightful 3 wheeler we have ever driven.” And despite its extreme rarity, AF is acknowledged in Georgano’s Encyclopaedia of Motor Manufacturers. Of around 7 produced, and a subsequent 5 ‘Grand Prix’ post Crabbe’s involvement, this must be the supreme example being a unique long wheel base prototype, the featured press car and then retained by Colin Crabbe for 39 years. In 2009 this AF was an invited guest at Mini 50th celebration at Goodwood when Sandy Fraser was reunited with it, and Rowan Atkinson took a spin along the track. Colin Crabbe parted with the Spider in 2010 to a retired (Vulcan) Flight Lieutenant at 5,000 miles, and 2,000 more have been covered since. Following our purchase directly from this owner, the perfectly sound wooden body has been carefully prepared and rejuvenated with 8 coats of marine varnish by notable Starcraft and Riva restorer Terry Dann, who built the iconic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang wooden ‘boat tail’ for the original 1968 film. Whilst being very careful not to over-restore this unique vehicle , the partially exposed engine compartment and ancillaries have been detailed, the custom made boot rack and wheels have been shot blasted and painted. The charming perambulator hood frame has been restored, the fabric still original and the aluminium bonnet polished. This Spider should appeal to either a Mini or Microcar collector, and with hints of a Gipsy Moth and Slipper Launch about it, this could equally tempt a vintage plane or boat enthusiast. The voluminous history file includes the AF Spider original sales brochure, the original Autocar and Motor features plus other press articles of the period mainly featuring this actual car. The original green log book accompanies the current V5C, there is a 1970’s photograph of the car in Aberdeenshire and Goodwood (2009), and several within a signed hard back copy of “Thrill of the chase” Colin Crabbe’s autobiography. There are numerous service bills, nice letters from both Sandy Fraser and Colin Crabbe to the second owner, old MOT’s etc.

1965 ASTON MARTIN DB5

 EX - ROBERT PLANT

There is no doubting the Aston Martin DB5’s classic credentials. With some justification, it is often referred to as the most famous car in the world. DB5s adorn collections worldwide.

Of no doubt also are the credentials of Led Zeppelin. Rock anthems such as Stairway to Heaven, performed by Robert Plant CBE, have endured and with some justification. The band have become an icon of 20th-century popular culture.

The Aston Martin DB5 we are delighted to offer, chassis number 1744/R, was built in 1965 and found its way into Robert Plant’s ownership in the early 1970s. Robert Plant, a West Midlands resident, held ownership until summer 1986, when it was sold to father and son collectors, also based in the West Midlands. Shortly thereafter the car was entrusted to Aston Martin agents, Chapman Spooner, for restorative works bringing the car to its current and exemplary condition.

Entered into a number of AMOC and local Concours during the 1980s, the car remained in this ownership until 2008 when it was purchased by the current owner from Nicholas Mee & Co. Used very sparingly and kept in a controlled environment since 2008, yet regularly maintained by the owners local and respected Aston Martin Specialists. Mechanically excellent, with only the lightest signs of use, this iconic car can most accurately be described as having received, a Whole Lotta Love. [sic]

Available to view now at our showrooms in West London.
