1988 LANCIA DELTA S4 STRADALE
From Joe Macari Performance Cars
Lancia Delta S4 Stradale, 1 of 45 road-cars remaining
. A unique opportunity to invest in rallying history.
Specification
Lancia have always been associated with Rallying,
especially in the glorious 80s with the Group B monsters. The Delta S4
is one of the most iconic rally cars in the sport's history, replacing
the 037 Monte Carlo and competing in the World Championships in 1985 and
1986 until the FIA banned Group B spec cars. In group B trim, the
1759cc four-cylinder engine had an official 480 bhp (although many
believe the true figure was closer to 600), due to its revolutionary
Turbocharging and Supercharging, designed to reduce lag. Independent
figures suggest that the S4 could accelerate to 100km/h in 2.3 seconds
on gravel! The S4 will also go down in the rallying archives due to the
tragic death of legend Henri Toivonen and his co-driver Sergio Cresto in
the 1986 Tour de Corse. This travesty, amongst others at the time, were
the reason that the 'glory years' of rallying needed to be brought to
an end.
For homoligation processes, Lancia
also built a claimed 200 Delta S4 Stradales in the mid-1980s; a
road-going version of the Group B monster. However, records suggest that
only around 65 cars were ever produced, with 20 being destroyed or
converted to competition-spec for privateer racing. Although power was
reduced to around 200bhp, the car retained the twin-charging of the
rally-car. In fact, many stradales were taken into competition by their
owners, especially as boosting power from the 4-cylinder engine was an easy procedure.
The car we are able to offer, is
one of the few remaining perfect Delta S4s, a true road-going version of
a rally and automotive icon. Built in 1985, the car cost £55,000 from
new and has covered only 21,000km. Furthermore, this S4 has recently
undergone substantial restoration on the bodywork, mechanics and
paintwork, meaning it is presented in 'better than new' condition. The
S4 is currently sitting in full 'stradale' specification, however a
spare Group B front-end and Stradale rear-end can be sourced for the car
if required. Following its restoration, the car has dyno'd at over
300bhp and is naturally perfect in and out following months of attention
by Italian specialists. This S4 is now also in 'Potenziato Spec;' which
involves modifications such as wider rear tyres and strengthened
clutch. Although previously finished in Verde York and known amongst
enthusiasts as the "Green Car," the car is now finished in its original
factory Red with an untouched Beige suede interior.
This 1985 Lancia Delta S4 Stradale
is most probably the finest example in the world; and with only 45 cars
remaining, an investment opportunity that is rarely seen on the market.
