1954 ALFA ROMEO 1900 CSS TOURING COUPÉ

This very attractive Alfa Romeo is scintillating to drive and, with a history pinpointing its every move around the world, it has a provenance that’s as distinctive as its Carrozzeria Touring bodywork. As a thoroughbred example of the marque, it’s equally suitable for historic events or as a highly usable exemplar of the Italian coachbuilder’s art that could form a collection centrepiece.
Special coachwork on the 1900 chassis was a key part of Alfa Romeo’s appeal in 1954 when the car built. Carrozzeria Touring was the default choice for practical elegance, offering both the close-coupled three-window coupé and the five-window model we have here – one of a series of 949 examples constructed between 1951 and 1954. The difference between this one and most of the others is that’s it’s to the rare and most desirable CSS Super Sprint specification, where the alloy-headed engine comes with twin downdraught Solex carburettors and the transmission is a five-speed manual, in this case with its original column gearchange.
The car – chassis number 01801, engine number 1308-00844 – underwent a full and superb restoration starting in around 2010 and taking more than two years. In addition, we have lavished very many extra hours on the car, with comprehensive work and parts costing some £ 36,000. The resulting car is now absolutely beautiful.
The Superleggera bodywork is perfectly straight, its panel gaps tight and even, and the green paintwork is mirror-like and virtually unblemished. The chrome trim, badging and bumpers are equally excellent. Brand new Michelin X radial tyres adorn the beautifully-restored wire wheels, and the original Plexiglass rear side windows – typical of Touring’s desire to trim excess weight in the finished car – are very good and free or any serious scratches.
Inside, the instruments (having been rebuilt by North Hollywood Speedometer) remain superb, as is the flat, wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel. The barely-worn leather looks glorious in its two-tone green colours, and the carpets and wool headlining are of high quality. The under bonnet vista is glorious and carefully detailed. The carburettors were rebuilt a few years ago and are in rude health, which is highly fitting for a car that simply begs to be driven fast.
Accompanying documentation from Alfa Romeo’s Automobilismo Storico Centro Documentazione (Historic Automobile Documentation Centre) confirm this car was completed on 28 May 1954 and sold new on 27 December that year to a Mr Rezzaghi in San Francisco, certain to have been the proprietor of Alfa Romeo agent Rezzaghi Motors. The first owner, a D Mitchell of Arizona, possessed it from 1956 to ’62 and covered 36,000km, and the second owner in Pasadena, California increased that to 72,000km over the next 10 years. From 1975 until 2012 the Alfa Romeo moved to Canada, mostly under the ownership of Peter Stafferton, who is well known to the Alfa Romeo 1900 Register run by the hugely respected Peter Marshall. He initiated the full restoration, at which point the odometer was ‘zeroed’. The car was sold by Gooding & Company in 2017 and the new owner brought it to Britain.
To be frank, it has been hard for us not to drive this car continually while in our ownership, such as the vivid performance, the super clutch and the surprisingly snappy action of the five-speed column change with full synchromesh. It has a pre-war car aura with modern sports car responses. We’ve managed to restrict ourselves to about 200km, ample to be assured of what a lovely car this is, and that it is now ready for the most discerning of new potential owners to sample.

1961 FACEL VEGA FACELLIA CONVERTIBLE
In 1960, Facel entered the sports car market with the Facellia, a small car similar in size to the then popular Mercedes 190SL,  Facellia’s were advertised in three body styles: cabriolet, 2+2 coupé and 4-seat coupé, all with the same mechanical parts and a 2,450 mm (96.5 in) wheelbase. Styling was similar to the Facel HK500, but with rather elegant flush door handles. Following Facel Vega's demise several of M Daninos's styling cues were "borrowed" by Mercedes-Benz, Prices were roughly USD 4,000 for the Facellia, USD 5,500 for the Facel III and USD 6,000 for the Facel 6.
With the idea of creating a mass-produced all-French sports car competing with the Alfa Romeo’s, Facel moved away from American engines. The Facellia had manufactured their own  4-cylinder 1.65 Ltr DOHC engine built in France by Paul Cavallier of the Pont-à-Mousson company (which already provided manual gear boxes for the company's larger models) and utilised twin Weber 40 DCOE carbs.
Our car we have for sale is the Cabriolet version and is now super rare, It started life on 22nd March 1961, it still retains the original Factory twin cam engine and has the desirable 4 speed Pont-a-Mousson gearbox, it has its original and very rare Factory Hard Top included in the sale, with superb Old English white livery and original Red St James leather interior, original Nardi wood rimmed steering wheel, the engine bay is nicely detailed, it has the Factory steel wheels shod with Michelin 175/80/14 tyres and a black soft top, all of the vehicles stainless steel is in superb condition, she drives very well indeed, she is rock solid and has good History file, one long term previous owner, Nigel Cooper “Mr Facel Vega” of the 80’s and 90’s remembers the car fondly.

Our car has covered some 31,377 Miles believed genuine, with little use in the last few years being in a large cherished classic car collection, she is now ready for a new custodian and touring on some fine British and European roads.

 1979 COURIER CADILLAC
£POA
Chassis no. 6S69B8Q493526,
Royal Blue over Navy Blue with Black leather Interior and Black Mohair Roof.

This one-off Cadillac prototype was conceived by the previous owner’s company, Courier Products, in the late 1980s as a quality, everyday driveable alternative to the growing recreation market, and as a compliment to the great automotive styles of the 1930s. Hence the attention to detail in both the overall proportions, the full-flowing all aluminium coach-built bodywork, and the quality and accuracy of the fittings, based on a Mercedes 540K !

The ultimate aim was for maximum luxury, relaxing drive-ability and the best possible handling and roadholding, all in 1930s style. The decision to use the downsized 1979 Cadillac Seville, proven internationally and already with many of these qualities, was a natural, both for its robust reliability and as the product of a top-name marque. A team of local companies took on what initially appeared straightforward, only to discover otherwise, as it was intended to manufacture a small run of this coach built Cadillac.

Very good correspondence and enthusiasm from General Motors, Cadillac division and others, the sheer complexity of the undertaking, aggravated by the early 1990s recession, prevented any more being produced. Rather than abandoning the project, local enthusiasts rallied to complete the car as a labour of love. All the Seville’s modern conveniences ended up being included, from cruise control and air-conditioning to auto-dip headlights, electric boot-lid pull-down, electronic switch to make the hand built stainless steel exhaust to go straight through, and any others discovered on the way. Its drive-ability and handling owes much to the contributions made by other like-minded enthusiasts, without whom many of the articles and write-ups that followed, both here and abroad, would likely not have been forthcoming. As a fixed-head coupé rather than a true roadster, the car was legally able to remain a 1979 Cadillac Seville.

All attempts over the years to resurrect the project have met with estimates running into hundreds of thousands of pounds, making it quite impractical to do so, while at the same time confirming the difficulties involved in combining 1930s styling with modern drive-ability. Ongoing questioning eventually persuaded the owner to commit the story to paper, but in a non-technical, more entertaining form. 'Sidetracked, A True Life Motoring Saga' was published in 2005 and sold as a fund-raiser for ‘BEN', the motor trades charity.

Although far too lengthy to reproduce here, a detailed list of the car's specifications is available for inspection. Highlights include a 6.6-litre, fuel-injected V8 engine producing around 300bhp and 400ft/lbs of torque, three-speed Hydramatic 400 automatic transmission, limited-slip differential, varying-ratio power assisted steering, up-rated spring and damping, stiffer rear anti-roll bar, and increased breaking, power disc brakes, power windows, power seats, Only 47,890 miles have been covered by this vehicle in total.

This Courier Coupé is featured in 'The Cadillac Century' by John Heilig in the 'Dream Cars' section where it is afforded three pages of pictures and text, more than any other car in the book! Currently taxed/MoT'd, this unique vehicle is offered with Cadillac correspondence, MIRA test results (maximum speedometer reading 125mph), Swansea V5 document, and a letter from Goodwood-based Mithril Racing. Of particular interest, Mithril's letter quotes the company's main professional driver Chris Snowdon, who tested the Courier Cadillac at the Sussex circuit. 'The car is very impressive. It handles like the current Bentley Brooklands... and that is quite a compliment. It is beautifully neutral on the circuit, handling Goodwood’s ultra high-speed corners feeling nicely balanced with only a hint of reassuring understeer when you really push hard.'

Also available for inspection are some interesting and informative newspaper and magazine articles and many complimentary letters, both from the UK and abroad. In one magazine, editor Westley Peterson of Car Collector in the US, states 'We consider the car to be one of the best looking Neo-Classics ever built’.
